Control unit function (coding/programming), AWSSystem test
WARNING:
Danger of injury if the system test is carried out when the vehicle is in motion.
- Never carry out the system test when the vehicle is in motion.
The AWS control unit includes a system test, which can be activated using the 9718 PIWIS tester. This involves performing the following simulations:
- Seat empty
- Child
- Adult
- Seat jammed
Procedure:
1. Connect battery charger.
2. Open passenger's belt, remove belt from passenger's belt buckle if necessary.
3. Using the 9718 PIWIS tester, select the 'System test' menu item in the Airbag system.
4. Select a function and press [START].
5. Answer the question(s) that are asked.
6. Read off result (see overview).
7. To end a function, press [STOP].
8. Press [<<] to return to the menu.
Overview
NOTE:
- Depending on the software version, the message 'Airbag On'/'Airbag Off' can appear in the display.
- The message 'Airbag On' only appears when you switch from 'Seat empty'/'Child' to 'Adult'.
- The message 'Airbag Off' only appears when you switch from 'Adult' to 'Seat empty'/'Child'.
Teach sensors
The 'Teach sensors' menu item allows you to store the identification numbers of the sensors in the AWS control unit. If you do not know these, a fault is entered in the fault memory.
Procedure:
1. Select the 'Teach sensors' menu item and press [>>].
2. Follow the instructions on the Tester.
Calibration
The 'Calibration' menu item allows you to store the current weight of the unoccupied passenger's seat in the AWS control unit. It is possible to determine whether the seat is occupied based on this zero point. If calibration is not performed, a fault is entered in the fault memory.
Procedure:
1. Move passenger's seat into calibration position.

2. Select the Calibration menu item and press [>>].
3. Follow the instructions on the Tester.
Reset
The 'Reset' menu item allows you to write values permanently into the AWS control unit memory.
A reset is also performed if the ignition key is removed from the ignition lock for at least 30 seconds.
NOTE: If you erase the AWS fault memory, this is only reported to the airbag triggering unit after you have performed a reset.
Control unit replacement
When you select the 'Control unit replacement' menu item, the following functions are performed in sequence:
- Read vehicle identification.
- Write vehicle identification.
- Deactivate production mode.
- 'Teach sensors'.
- Perform 'Calibration'.
- 'Erase fault memory'.
- Perform 'Reset'.
Procedure:
1. Select the 'Control unit replacement' menu item and press [>>].
2. Follow the instructions on the Tester.
