Bar Ignition Module On Cylinder 5

Diagnostic conditions
- Battery positive voltage between 10 V and 16 V
- Time after engine starts greater than 10 seconds
- If time after engine starts greater than 10 seconds is not possible, starter speed is sufficient if battery is intact and ambient temperature is 20 °C

Possible cause of fault

The wiring might contain the following faults:
- Open circuit in signal wire
- Short circuit to B+ in signal wire
- Short circuit to ground in signal wire
- Short circuit to B+ in ground lead
- Open circuit in ground lead
- Open circuit in power supply line
- Short circuit to ground in power supply line
- Incorrect assignment of ground lead and positive lead

Following components can be affected:
- Bar ignition module faulty
- DME control module faulty

Affected terminals
V8 - DME control module plug B, pin 111, and pin 4 of bar ignition module plug
V6 - DME control module plug B, pin 103, and pin 4 of bar ignition module plug

Diagnosis/troubleshooting

NOTE:
- The bar ignition module cannot be tested as it is an active component.
- If a fault occurs in the positive or ground supply, the bar ignition module switches the input of the signal wire (pin 4) to high resistance in order to forward the fault to the DME control module. The DME control module then enters the fault in the fault memory. The "open circuit" fault can therefore have a number of causes. It is extremely important to carry out the troubleshooting as outlined in the following table.
- If a faulty bar ignition module is diagnosed, the connection to the engine ground must be checked before replacing it as otherwise a faulty engine ground connection will damage the new bar ignition module. See the relevant test step in the following tables.

CAUTION: Risk of damage to bar ignition modules. Plugs must always be disconnected from bar ignition modules that have been removed. Bar ignition modules that are still connected are damaged as a result of the long spark gap when the starter is activated.
