Wheel Hub: Service and Repair

Replacing front wheel bearing housing

Replacing front wheel bearing housing - preliminary work

1. Detach the central nut at the wheel carrier or, on the 911 Carrera 4/911 Turbo, the drive shaft fastening at the side of the wheel before raising the vehicle. Actuate the brake while doing this.
2. Raise the vehicle.

Removing front wheel bearing housing

1. Loosen stabilizer mount at stabilizer (counter with Torx T30).
2. Unscrew linkage for range adjustment -1- (headlight height adjustment) on the trailing arm. Only on left side.

On vehicles with all-wheel drive (911 Carrera 4/911 Turbo), remove the spoiler at the diagonal arm -2- (the air guide for the brake cooling).

Linkage for range adjustment

3. Loosen tie rod and control arm at wheel carriers and press off the ball joints with special tool press-out tool 9560. When loosening the lock nuts, counter at the ball-joint pins with special tool screwdriver 9546 (Torx screwdriver).

Loosening tie rod

4. Disconnect plug connection at wheel carrier and pull out plugs. Undo plug connection at wheel carrier and unclip electric wires at the spring strut.
5. Loosen holder for brake line/brake hose at wheel carrier. Loosen brake caliper from wheel carrier and attach in wheel arch.
6. Open luggage compartment and remove the relevant design cover over the spring strut.
7. Loosen cover over piston rod (at spring strut). For PASM spring struts, carefully disconnect the connecting cable at the connector and unclip it from the bracket -arrows-.

PASM bracket and connector

8. Mark the installation position of the spring-strut mount (position of the three collar nuts). Loosen lock nuts (3 ea. M8) at spring-strut mount.
9. For all-wheel drive vehicles, attach protection to the drive shaft (drive shaft remains mounted on the front-axle final drive).
10. Pull out spring strut with wheel carrier.
11. Loosen clamped connection between spring strut/wheel carrier.

Pull out spring strut from wheel carrier.

Completing (disassembling and assembling) wheel bearing housing

1. Disassemble old wheel bearing housing and fit reusable parts to the new wheel bearing housing (speed sensor, brake cover plate, lid for wheel bearing -3-, fastening screws -2-, wheel hub -1- and the tension bolt for RWD vehicles).

The wheel bearing -4- must be replaced.

Wheel bearing housing (individual components)

1.1. Take off brake cover plate on the wheel bearing housing. Press wheel hub -1- out of the wheel bearing housing (wheel bearing).
1.2. Remove lid -3- for wheel bearing on the wheel bearing housing (4 screws).
1.3. Press new wheel bearing -4- into the new (heated) wheel bearing housing and complete the wheel bearing housing.

Installing front wheel bearing housing

Information:
^ If assembly work was performed or parts replaced that affect the vehicle height, a complete wheel alignment is necessary.

1. Install in reverse order. Before installing, do a visual check on the parts. Replace brake caliper fastening screws.

The sensor for the range adjustment does not need to be calibrated.

2. Do not grease screwed connections in Dacromet finish - aluminum color. Observe correct tightening torques.
3. Place the spring-strut/wheel-carrier assembly into the vehicle. Note installation position of the spring-strut mount. The arrow markings must point to the outer side of the vehicle. The shock-absorber piston rod is thereby shifted outwards. Use new lock nuts. Before tightening the lock nuts, align spring-strut mount in accordance with the applied marking (position of the three collar nuts).

Replacing front wheel bearing housing - subsequent work

1. Fit front wheel.
2. Tighten the central nut at the wheel carrier or, with the 911 Carrera 4/911 Turbo, the drive shaft fastening at the side of the wheel to 460 Nm (340 ftlb.). Actuate the brake while doing this.
3. Check wheel alignment values on front axle and adjust if necessary.
