WM 425219 Removing and installing rear wheel bearing housing (wheel carrier)
Tools
Technical values
Preliminary work
1. If the wheel bearing needs to be replaced, loosen axle nut (vehicle on ground) whilst operating the brake (2 fitters required).
2. Raise the vehicle -> 401000 Lifting the vehicle
3. Remove rear wheel -> 440519 Removing and installing wheel 44051900 Removing and installing wheel
Removing rear wheel bearing housing
Removing
Wheel bearing housing/wheel bearing
1. Disengage the parking-brake cable at the parking-brake lever.
Removing/fitting parking-brake cable
Release the parking-brake lever (do not operate again until fitting is complete; self-adjusting).
Open cover of oddments tray in centre console.
Remove bottom of oddments tray in centre console.
Remove the relevant parking-brake cable sideways out of the turnbuckle.
2. Disconnect and remove electric connections (combination wire) on the wheel bearing housing.
Combination wire
Open safety clip on combination wire for ABS and brake pad wear indicator on the wheel bearing housing and pull out the connectors.
Screw out screw -1- on combination wire.
Remove line for brake pad wear indicator from the support on the spring strut.
3. Remove speed sensor -> 451519 Removing and installing speed sensor 451519 Removing and installing rear speed sensor
4. Loosen holder for brake line/brake hose at the wheel bearing housing.
5. Remove brake caliper.
Brake caliper/brake pads
Release brake caliper from wheel bearing housing (do not open brake system) and suspend it in the wheel arch.
6. Remove brake disc and parking-brake shoes.
Overview of brake shoes
6.1. Remove parking-brake shoes -> 468320 Removing and installing brake shoes 468320 Removing and installing brake shoes
6.2. Disengage parking-brake cable at the actuating lever -7- and pull it out of the guide on the wheel bearing housing.
7. Loosen the drive shaft at the transmission and wheel bearing housing (only at the wheel bearing housing if the wheel bearing or wheel bearing housing needs to be replaced).
7.1. Loosen the drive shaft at the transmission.
Drive shaft
Slide a protective hose over the drive shaft to prevent damage to the drive shaft.
7.2. Loosen the drive shaft at wheel bearing housing (only if the wheel bearing or wheel bearing housing needs to be replaced).
Pressing out drive shaft
Use universal drive shaft/wheel hub extractor as of model '86 NR.87-1 to carefully press out the pin of the drive shaft until the shaft can be moved by hand.
8. Remove connecting link (suspension/stabiliser), toe and transverse control arm at the wheel bearing housing.
Rear toe and transverse control arm
8.1. Remove toe and transverse control arm -1, 2- at the wheel bearing housing.
Use the press-out tool P 9560 for pressing out the ball joint. When loosening the lock nuts, counter at the ball-joint pin with a screwdriver P 9546 (Torx screwdriver).
8.2. Remove connecting link (suspension/stabiliser) -3- at the wheel bearing housing (connection between wheel bearing housing and spring strut).
Counter at the connecting link -3- (a/f 18) while loosening the nut (a/f 18).
9. Remove wheel bearing housing together with drive shaft.
To pull the ball-joint pin out of the wheel bearing housing, pull the transverse control arm down evenly with both hands while swivelling the wheel bearing housing outwards. Get another person to help you with this.
Installing rear wheel bearing housing
Installing
1. Insert wheel bearing housing together with drive shaft.
To insert the ball-joint pin into the wheel bearing housing, pull the transverse control arm down evenly with both hands while swivelling the wheel bearing housing inwards. Get another person to help you with this.
2. Fit connecting link (suspension/stabiliser), toe and transverse control arm at the wheel bearing housing.
Rear toe and transverse control arm
2.1. Tighten nut on connecting link.
Counter at the connecting link while tightening.
=> Tightening torque: 85 Nm (63 ftlb.)
2.2. Tighten nut on toe control arm -1b-.
=> Tightening torque: 75 Nm (56 ftlb.)
2.3. Tighten nut on transverse control arm -1a-.
=> Tightening torque: 75 Nm (56 ftlb.)
3. Fit the drive shaft on the transmission.
=> Tightening torque: 81 Nm (60 ftlb.)
4. Install parking-brake shoes.
Overview of brake shoes
4.1. Press parking-brake cable into guide on wheel bearing housing and engage it on the actuating lever -7-.
4.2. Install parking-brake shoes -> 468320 Removing and installing brake shoes 468320 Removing and installing brake shoes
5. Secure brake hose bracket to wheel bearing housing.
=> Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.)
6. Install speed sensor -> 451519 Removing and installing rear speed sensor 451519 Removing and installing rear speed sensor.
7. Secure brake caliper on wheel bearing housing.
=> Tightening torque: 85 Nm (63 ftlb.)
8. Connect electric connections (combination wire) on wheel bearing housing.
Combination wire
Tighten screw -1- on combination wire.
Secure line for brake pad wear indicator on spring strut support.
Connect electric connectors for combination wire for ABS and brake pad wear indicator and lock using a safety clip.
=> Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.)
9. Engage the parking-brake cable at the parking-brake lever and adjust parking-brake shoes.
Removing/fitting parking-brake cable
9.1. Engage the parking-brake cable at the parking-brake lever.
9.2. Check parking brake adjustment.
Check basic setting of parking-brake shoes. The parking brake cannot be adjusted at the parking-brake cable since it is self-adjusting.
