Symptom
"Blue smoke" from engine.
Causes and remedial action
Cause
- Engine-oil level too high or
- Older data record/version in DME control unit.
Remedial action
Check engine-oil level:
- if engine-oil level is over Maximum marking:
=> Adjust engine-oil level to Maximum marking and
=> Clean the inside of the intake manifold.
If this is not OK:
=> Program DME control unit with PIWIS Tester 9718 and installed test software version 26.000 (or higher), see "Technical Information" -> 100100 "Blue smoke" from the engine after engine start (74/09)

Checking engine-oil level
1. Check the engine-oil level as described in the repair information => Checking engine-oil level".
NOTICE
Incorrect oil level
- Risk of damage to engine or catalytic converter
-> Check the oil level regularly.
-> The oil level must not fall below the Minimum marking or rise above the Maximum marking.
-> Only use approved engine oils.
Information
If the complaint "blue smoke from engine" is received and the engine-oil level is over the Maximum marking, the engine must not be replaced:
Work through the following points before further work is performed.
2. Drain the engine oil as described under "-> 170155 Changing engine oil and oil filter - section on "Draining" Removal and Replacement" in the repair information and collect it in a clean container.
3. Reduce the amount of drained engine oil by half a litre and fill the rest back in as described in the repair information => Filling in engine oil".
4. Check the engine-oil level again as described in the repair information => Checking engine-oil level":
- If the engine oil goes up to the Maximum marking, continue with Step 5.
- If the engine oil is still over the Maximum marking, repeat Steps 2 to 4 again.
5. Remove the resonance tube as described in the repair information -> 247419 Removing and installing resonance tube - section on "Removing" Service and Repair".
6. The entire inside of the intake manifold must now be cleaned with a clean cloth.
7. Install the resonance tube as described in the repair information -> 247419 Removing and installing resonance tube - section on "Installing" Service and Repair".
End of remedial action.
