Ambient Light Sensor: Description and Operation

The rain/light functions have been retained and expanded to include a moisture function, which helps to detect misting on the windshield. The data is made available to air-conditioning control via the data line in order to prevent the window from misting.

Rain sensor function:
This sensor detects quantities of rainfall and issues a wipe request for the windscreen wiper. The sensor is attached to the windscreen near the rearview mirror.

Light sensor function:
The light sensor, which is integrated into the rain sensor, detects the rapid or slow onset of darkness, e.g. a tunnel or dusk, and outputs a signal accordingly to switch on the driving light. If it is bright enough, the relevant signal for switching off the driving light is output.

Functional concept behind the moisture sensor:
The condensation sensor is used to identify how likely the windshield (inside the vehicle) is to become misted. The data is made available to air-conditioning control via the data line. Air-conditioning control can then respond and prevent condensation.

Exterior light function:
- Headlight flasher, flashing via CAN signal (CSCM)
- Hazard warning light operated manually by hazard warning light button, automatic crash signal (flashing)
