Technical values





Preliminary work

1. Disconnect the battery. -> 270619 Removing and installing battery - section on "Disconnecting" 270619 Removing and Installing Battery
2. Remove moulding for dashboard at the driver's side at the left and right of the steering wheel -> 705819 Removing and installing moulding for dashboard - section on "Removing" 705819 Removing and installing moulding for dashboard
3. Remove instrument panel cover on the driver's side. -> 701619 Removing and installing instrument panel cover - section on "Removing" Service and Repair
4. Remove steering column casing. -> 481319 Removing and installing steering column casing - section on "Removing" 481319 Removing and installing steering column trim
5. Remove front footwell outlet vent on driver's side. -> 805519 Removing and installing front footwell outlet vent - section on "Removing" 805519 Removing and installing front footwell outlet vent

WARNING

Incorrect handling of airbag units

- Triggering of airbag unit
- System faults can occur

-> Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
-> A voltage supply (e.g. battery charger) must not be connected to the external power supply/jump-lead starting terminals.
-> Disconnect the battery and insulate the ground strap so that all contact with a ground carrier is avoided.
-> Wait 1 minute after disconnecting the battery.
-> Only pull off connector on the triggering unit after the waiting time has elapsed.
-> Make sure that no foreign objects are located in front of the airbag unit during installation.
-> Replace damaged parts during removal.
-> Always position the airbag unit in such a way that the airbag opening is facing upwards.
-> If removed for an extended period, the airbag unit must be stored in a safe place.
-> Airbag units must not come into contact with grease, oil, detergents, liquids, or similar substances.
-> Do not expose airbag units to temperatures above 90°.
-> Do not remove the short-circuit spring on the plug-in contacts.
-> Ignition and preparations may only be carried out by skilled staff, supervised by a second responsible person.
-> Before disposal, the airbag unit must be rendered harmless by electrical ignition performed in accordance with all precautionary measures, thereby preventing it from being used incorrectly.

WARNING

Incorrect handling of safety bolts

- Danger of injury
- Loss of torque

-> Always use new fastening screws and nuts following removal.
-> Observe specified tightening torques.
-> Carry out a visual inspection of all re-used parts.

Information

Always replace the fastening screws on the airbag unit after customer service and reworking. The micro-self-locking screws must not be treated, greased or loosened and then screwed on again.





Trim panel under dashboard - overview

1. Unscrew fastening screws at the left and right of the steering column.

2. Unscrew fastening screws under the side decorative cover (on the fuse box).

3. Unscrew fastening screws on the steering column holder.

4. Unscrew and remove fastening screws on the transverse strut -arrow A- and pull the trim panel forward towards the driver's seat -arrow B-.

5. Release vehicle diagnostic socket -arrow- and pull it off.

6. Release connector for knee airbag -arrow A- and pull it off -arrow B-.

7. Pull off connector for footwell lighting -arrow-.

8. Release and pull off connector for parking brake -arrow-.

9. Remove trim panel.

Installing trim panel under dashboard

1. Install in reverse order.
2. Unless specified otherwise, fastening screws must be screwed in and tightened to the following torque.=> Tightening torque: 3.2 Nm (2 ftlb.)
3. Position the trim panel -arrow A- and screw in fastening screws on the transverse strut -arrow B-. => Tightening torque: 8.0 Nm (6 ftlb.)

Subsequent work

1. Install instrument panel cover on the driver's side. -> 701619 Removing and installing instrument panel cover - section on "Installing" Service and Repair
2. Install steering wheel. -> 481019 Removing and installing steering wheel - section on "Installing" 481019 Removing and installing steering wheel
3. Install steering column casing. -> 481319 Removing and installing steering column casing - section on "Installing" 481319 Removing and installing steering column trim
4. Install moulding for dashboard at the driver's side at the left and right of the steering wheel. -> 705819 Removing and installing moulding for dashboard - section on "Installing" 705819 Removing and installing moulding for dashboard
5. Install front footwell outlet vent on driver's side. -> 805519 Removing and installing front footwell outlet vent - section on "Installing" 805519 Removing and installing front footwell outlet vent
6. Connect the battery. -> 270619 Removing and installing battery - section on "Connecting" 270619 Removing and Installing Battery
