Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Performance Check

The following procedures can be performed using standard shop equipment. However, further testing of electronic control components requires the use of diagnostic tester B.Vi.958 (early models), MS 1700 (late models) or a suitable equivalent.

Fig. 2 Transaxle performance check. Approximate shift speeds:

1. Ensure accelerator and shift control cables are properly adjusted.
2. Check transaxle fluid and fill as required with Dexron II type automatic transmission fluid.
3. Drive vehicle for several miles to bring transaxle to normal operating temperature.
4. Operate vehicle in all transmission ranges observing shift quality, shift points and kickdown operation. With selector lever in D shift points, Fig. 2, are determined by the computer based on information received from sensors and data stored in the computer memory.
5. If transaxle fails to operate smoothly, without harshness or hesitation, refer to ``Troubleshooting'' section to diagnose malfunctions.
6. If transaxle fails to shift in proper sequence, check electronic controls as outlined and repair as needed.
