Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair

Fig. 5 Multi-function switch replacement:

Due to the molded wiring harness joining electronic control components, the multi-function switch must be cut out of the harness, and the replacement switch spliced into the harness using connectors supplied with the switch.

1. Remove multi-function switch from transaxle.
2. Cut harness joining the switch and computer the same length as the replacement switch harness.
3. Remove 2.6 inches of outer insulation from computer end of switch harness, Fig. 5.
4. Remove 0.20 inch of insulation from each wire in harness.
5. Install seals (J) and terminals on wire ends, then secure terminals with a suitable crimping tool, Fig. 5.
6. Insert terminals into connector supplied with replacement switch, ensuring that color codes are matched with codes on replacement switch, and install connector lock. Some computers are connected to the multi-function switch with 7 wires. On these models, cut the yellow or white wire flush with the protective sleeve.
7. Connect replacement multi-function switch to computer harness and install switch on transaxle.
