Neutral Safety Switch: Service and Repair

MANUAL TRANSMISSION

Back-Up Lamp Switch

The switch is located to the lower right of the transmission shift rail.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise vehicle.
3. Disconnect switch wiring and remove switch.
4. Reinstall switch with a new copper O-ring. Reconnect the wiring.
5. Check the transmission lubricant level.
6. Lower vehicle and reconnect battery.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

The back-up and neutral safety switches are combined in a multifunction switch located on the transmission. The switch is cam driven by the gear shift linkage. To replace the switch, raise and support vehicle, disconnect switch electrical connectors, then remove switch.




The lighting, turn signal and wiper switching functions are included in a combination switch. Refer to ``Light Switch, Replace'' for replacement of turn signal switch.
