Subject: High Temperature Gauge Reading

Application: 1991- 900 Models with B212 Engine

With the introducton of the 2.1 liter (B212) naturally aspirated engine in 1991 model year 900 and 900S models, the cooling fan circuit was changed compared to the 2.0 liter engine. When the B212 engine coolant temperature rises to the specified level only the main cooling fan comes on if the A/C is switched off. If the A/C is switched on, both the main cooling fan and the A/C cooling fan operate. This differs from the previous fan wiring logic where both fans engaged when the engine temperature reached the specified level regardless of the status of the A/C switch.

In certain driving conditions (city driving, A/C not on), this may cause the dashboard temperature gauge to read just below the red zone. While this is not indicative of an overheating situation, it may be cause for some customer questions.

The cooling system is working as designed and is providing adequate engine cooling. However, if a customer is prone to encountering this type of driving condition and is not comfortable with the gauge reading, the cooling fan wiring circuit can be rewired so that both fans engage without the A/C being activated.

Parts Required

Relay P/N 85 72 190

Fuse Box Pin P/N 79 71 708

18 gauge wire local supply

Splice Connector P/N 95 59 998

Splice Connector P/N 95 60 004

Cooling Fan Circuit Rewiring Procedure

1. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery.

2. Unplug the Bosch relay from position "J" of the main fuse box (this Bosch relay is no longer needed.)

3. Reposition the pins in the relay socket so they match the configuration of Cartier relay P/N 85 72 190:

A. Wire 113A (black 0.5 mm) - position 86

B. Wire 114 (white 2.5 mm) - position 87

C. Wire 116E (blue O.5 mm) / 116C (yellow/red 2.5 mm) - position 30

D. Wire 406 (blue 0.75 mm) - position 85

E. The locally supplied wire must be added to position 85a and spliced into wire 111B (green) from pin 87 of relay 156 found in fuse box position H.

4. Install the Cartier relay 85 72 190 into position J.

5. Reconnect the ground cable to the battery.

6. Check the system function. Both cooling fans should come on if the A/C is switched on or if the engine coolant temperature gets warm enough to engage the cooling fan without the A/C engaged.

Reference the revised wiring diagram in this bulletin to see how the wiring should look after following the rewiring procedure.

Warranty Information:

If a customer complaint requires this rewiring, you may submit a claim using Failure Code 36544-61-0-01-05. Time Allowance is 0.5 hours which should be entered as straight time.
