Subject
Addressing A Customer Complaint of Smell from Climate System
Application
All 9000
Under certain conditions, a customer may complain that a bad smell is being generated through the climate system of their vehicle upon start up. This condition is caused by the growth of bacteria in the condensation water remaining on and around the evaporator.
To address this complaint, follow the instructions below. If all instructions are followed properly, the smell will not recur for at least one year.
Before starting to perform this work, perform the following checks:
^ Check for heater core leaks. Small leaks from the heater core can be the cause of a very bad smell. A leak from the heater core will usually result in a "sweet" smell, caused by engine coolant.
^ Airborne pollution will speed up the growth of bacteria. Make certain the ventilation air filter is in place, clean and is changed at the proper intervals.
^ Check that there is no restriction in the drain pipe from the climate housing. A build up of water in this area will also cause bacteria to grow, resulting in an odor.

IMPORTANT
To correctly apply the product, follow the instructions exactly. If you do not, there is a risk that the treatment will wash away with poor results and durability.
The procedure takes about two hours. However, only about 30 minutes of actual labor time is involved. Most of the time will be spent away from the vehicle, allowing time for the evaporator to dry and the product to cure.
Action:
1. Remove the bulkhead cover.
2. Remove the ventilation air filter cover and filter. See Figure 1.
3. Inspect the filter and coil for foreign material. Remove foreign material from the evaporator if necessary. See Figure 2.
4. Replace the filter cover (leave the filter out).
5. Disconnect the one-pole cable connector at the compressor (preventing the compressor from engaging). See Figure 3.
6. Start the engine.
7. Lower the side windows (front and rear) approx. 15 mm. See Figure 4.
8. With the car operating at normal temperature, switch the heat and tan speed to high (maximum) and choose recirculation mode. See Figure 5.
9. Let the vehicle run for 30 minutes to dry and warm up the evaporator.
10. Shake bottle of Airsept A/C treatment well. Attach AS2 nozzle to shop air and Airsept bottle. Attach nozzle extension to AS2 nozzle. Adjust pressure to 6-8 bar (85-120 psi).
11. Switch mode to outside air. Shut off the engine. Remove the filter cover and insert nozzle extension into the bottom of the evaporator case, with nozzle extension holes facing the evaporator.
12. With an even motion, move the nozzle extension evenly across the evaporator housing, and spray 1/2 of the bottle of Airsept A/C treatment onto the leading edge of the evaporation See Figure 6.
Replace the filter cover. Start the HVAC fan for 10 seconds. (Switch the key on, engine off.)
Shut the fan off.
Remove the filter cover and spray the second half of the Airsept bottle over the evaporation
13. Reinstall the filter cover. Start the engine. Switch to recirculation. Fan and heat should be on high (maximum). Run engine for 10 seconds to make sure the entire evaporator assembly is covered with the product. Shut off the engine.
14. Let the car sit for 30 minutes.
15. Start the engine. Climate system should be on recirculate, full heat and fan speed with the windows open.
16. Shut off the engine after one hour.
17. Replace the ventilation air filter if necessary. Reinstall the filter cover. Reinstall the bulkhead cover.
18. Since you have loosened the windshield washer fluid line, check the operation of the washer. Reconnect the one-pole connector at the compressor.
