Power Flow
1ST GEAR (SELECTOR LEVER POSITION D)
- Power is transmitted through the torque converter (turbine) and the turbine shaft to clutch A. This drives sun gear 2 via the sun gear shaft.
- The 1st one-way clutch locks the planet carrier in an anti-clockwise direction of rotation.
- Sun gear 2 drives planet. gears 2 which drive planet gears 1. These, in turn, drive the annulus which is connected to the output shaft.
- Ratio: 2.58.
1ST GEAR (SELECTOR LEVER POSITION 1)
- Brake D is now also applied, i.e. the planet carrier is locked so that engine braking will be obtained when the accelerator pedal is released.
2ND GEAR
- As with 1st gear, sun gear 2 is driven by the turbine shaft and clutch A. Sun gear 1 is locked by brake C and brake band C'.
- 2nd one-way clutch is in the traction position.
- Planet gears 2 drive planet gears 1 which roll on the stationary sun gear 1. The power flow then continues, as in 1st gear, through the annulus.
- Ratio: 1.41.
3RD GEAR
- About 40 % of the power is transmitted hydraulically between the engine and the transmission.
- As in 1st and 2nd gears, power is transmitted through the turbine shaft and clutch A to sun gear 2.
- About 60 % of the power is transmitted mechanically between the engine and transmission.
- Power is transmitted through the engine shaft to clutch E, which is applied. The inner clutch plate holder E is in mesh with the planet carrier.
- Since sun gear 2 and the planet carrier are driven simultaneously, the ratio of the planetary gear train is about 1:1. The output shaft is again driven via the annulus.
- Ratio: 1.0.
4TH GEAR
- Power is transmitted through the engine shaft and clutch E to the planet carrier. Sun gear 1 is locked by the drum of brake band C'. Planet gears 1 run on sun gear 1 and drive the output shaft through the annulus.
- Ratio: 0.74.
REVERSE GEAR
- Clutch B is applied and transmits power from the turbine shaft, through the drum to sun gear 1.
- Brake D is applied and locks the planet carrier. As a result, planet gears 1 reverse the direction of rotation between the sun gear 1 and the annulus, which now drives the output shaft anti-clockwise. .
- Ratio: 2.88.
