No Drive
FAULT SYMPTOM
- No drive.
ACTION
NOTE: Fill in the test form. When returning items, the test form should be included.
1. Checking selector lever.
- Check that selector lever movement actuates the gear selector arm on the transmission.
- If OK:
Proceed to point 2.
- If not OK:
Investigate cause and take remedial action.
2. Checking fluid level.
- Place the car on level ground and, with the engine running, check transmission fluid level using the dipstick.
NOTE:
^ There are two scales on the dipstick, one for 40° C and one for 80° C.
^ Use a lint-free cloth to wipe the dipstick.
- If fluid level is OK:
Proceed to point 5.
- If fluid level is too high:
Switch off the engine.
Drain fluid until the level is correct on the dipstick.
Then proceed to point 3.
- If the fluid level is too low:
Fill with automatic transmission fluid until the level is correct on the dipstick, then proceed to point 4.
3. Checking drive.
- Check if the transmission provides drive.
- If OK:
Fault has been corrected.
- If not OK:
Proceed to point 5.
4. Checking drive.
- Check if the transmission provides drive.
- If OK:
Rectify any leakage and, if necessary, change the fluid.
- If not OK:
Proceed to point 5.
After fault diagnosis, remember to correct any fluid leakage.
5. Checking fluid quality.
- Drain the fluid into a clean receptacle and remove the transmission fluid strainer.
- Visually check the quality of the fluid and check the fluid strainer.
- Note that the fluid always becomes darker with use and is most dark just before the planned service change.
- If fluid strainer and fluid are OK:
Proceed to point 6.
- If the fluid is highly contaminated, extremely dark, burnt or if the fluid strainer contains excessive particles:
Change or repair the transmission.
6. Checking system pressure.
- Measure system pressure by connecting pressure gauge 87 91 600 to the gear case.
- If system pressure is OK:
Proceed to point 7.
- If system pressure is not OK:
Check the fluid pump and its drive (drive plate).
7. Checking selector shaft and segment.
- Check and, if necessary, adjust the selector shaft and segment in the gear case.
- Then check if drive is OK with the selector lever in different positions.
- If drive is OK:
The fault has been corrected.
- If drive is lost only in position R:
Proceed to point 8.
- If there is no drive at all:
Check and clean the valve body.
Check especially traction valve 3-4.
If necessary, change the valve body.
8. Checking governor pressure.
- With the car stationary, check governor pressure.
There should be no governor pressure.
- If there is no governor pressure:
Check and, if necessary, change the valve body.
- If there is governor pressure:
If the pressure gauge shows a reading, the governor is probably seizing.
Clean the governor.
If necessary, change the governor, including the two rubber seals.
- If there is still no drive in position R. check and, if necessary, change the valve body.
