Passive safety system SRS (Supplementary Restraint System)

The SRS system controls both the belt tensioners and the airbags. The belt tensioners are of the pyrotechnical type.

All cars are equipped with airbag on the driver side. Cars with US specification are all also equipped with an airbag on the passenger side. In certain other markets, passenger airbag is offered as a factory-fitted option.

3. Airbag, passenger side
4. Knee shield, passenger side
5. SRS control module
6. Pyrotechnical belt tensioner

The SRS is a compliment to the car seat belts and considerably improves collision safety in a frontal collision. During a collision comparable to a speed of over 25 km/h into a barrier, the airbags and belt tensioners are activated and prevent the driver and the passenger in the front seat from hitting the steering wheel, facia and windshield.

The driver airbag is located in the center of the steering wheel and the passenger airbag is located above the glove compartment.

The entire system is controlled by a control module located in the tunnel under the floor console, behind the handbrake. The control module senses a collision and sends a current impulse to the electric detonators. The electric detonators activate the gas generators and the airbags are inflated.

The control module continually tests the SRS and stores any trouble codes.

To prevent the driver or passenger sliding in under the facia during a collision, there are knee shields under the facia.
