Fault Difficult To Detect When Diagnostic Trouble Code P0106 Is Indicated

Fault symptom
Too slow reaction on the absolute pressure sensor or pressure too high in the intake manifold (air leakage)

Criteria
Diagnostic trouble code P0106 exists to detect two faults by measuring the pressure in the intake manifold at rapid throttle closure. One fault is a too slow reaction on the absolute pressure sensor and the other is too high pressure in the intake manifold (which indicates air leakage).

When the throttle closes at high engine speed the pressure in the intake manifold must drop below 50 kPa within a certain time. If the pressure does not drop sufficiently or quickly enough then there is a problem with the absolute pressure sensor or leakage somewhere at the intake manifold.

Diagnostic help
If P0106 is indicated and a faulty component cannot be detected via normal fault diagnosis then this can be due to incorrect camshaft setting. In this case the leak will come from the intake valves as they are not closing at the right moment. Consequently air is forced back by the pistons in the intake manifold and causes a too slow reduction in pressure.

Procedure
^ Check the camshaft setting.
