Wind Rush or Rustle Noise from Windshield Area at Speeds Above 48-56 km/h (30-35 mph) (Replace Windshield Upper Reveal Molding)

2002-2006 Saturn VUE
Condition
Some customers may comment on wind rush or rustle noise coming from the top of the windshield area at vehicle speeds above 48-56 km/h (30-35 mph).
Cause
There may be a small gap between the windshield upper reveal molding (black rubber molding across top of windshield) and the roof panel.
Correction
Diagnose the customer concern and confirm the location of the condition. Replace the windshield upper reveal molding (lace) if necessary.
Diagnosis
1. Inspect for a gap between the windshield upper reveal molding and the roof by trying to slide a business card between the roof panel and the rear edge of the windshield upper reveal molding.
2. If a business card can be inserted without lifting the windshield upper reveal molding in any way, tape off only between the roof panel and the windshield upper reveal molding.
3. Test drive the vehicle to confirm that the noise condition is resolved.
^ If the noise condition is resolved, follow service procedures in this bulletin to remove and replace the windshield upper reveal molding without windshield removal.
^ If the noise condition has NOT been resolved, refer to "Air/Wind Noise" diagnostics.
Service Procedure
1. Make sure that the windshield and the roof of the vehicle are clean and dry.
2. Remove the roof rail appliques.
3. To protect the windshield and paint during removal and reinstallation of the reveal molding, place a strip of 50 mm (2 in) masking tape across the windshield below, and along the roof panel above, the reveal molding.
Note:
Do not allow any tool to come into contact with windshield. Tool contact with the windshield may cause cracks or fractures in the windshield.
4. Use angled pointed nose pliers to grip the center section of the windshield upper reveal molding at end of molding on the drivers side. Pull upward and twist counterclockwise to start removal of the molding by disengaging the molding channel from the windshield.
5. Starting at the free end, pull the windshield upper reveal molding off of the windshield. You may need to use a plastic putty knife or other plastic tool to assist in separating the molding from the windshield.
6. Clean the area at the top of the windshield under the old windshield upper reveal molding.
7. Place a 1-2 mm (0.04-0.08 in) bead of urethane adhesive (1) on the new windshield upper reveal molding (2), in the windshield channel, as shown. Ensure that the urethane adhesive is applied consistently on the molding.
Important:
Make sure part is centered across the windshield before installing.
8. Install the new windshield upper reveal molding onto the windshield on one end, and then move across the windshield engaging from this starting point to the other side of windshield. Make sure the channel is fully seated against the windshield and the roof panel. Inspect for and clean any excess urethane adhesive on the windshield or the roof panel.
9. On both driver's and passenger's side, fill the areas shaded in the illustration above with urethane adhesive approximately 10 mm (0.4 in) deep.
10. Remove the protective masking tape installed in Step 3.
11. Install the roof rail appliques.
