Subject: Scraping Noise When Operating Rear Side Door Window, Vertical Scratches on Exterior Surface of Rear Window Glass (R&R Rear Side Door Window Outer Sealing Strip/Trim Retaining Clips)

Models:
2008-2010 Chevrolet Captiva Sport
2008-2009 Saturn VUE

Condition

Some customers may comment on hearing a scraping noise when operating the rear side door window. They may also comment on seeing scratches on the exterior surface of the glass.

Cause

This condition may be caused by the clips that retain the rear side door window outer sealing strip contacting the glass during window operation.

Correction

Remove the rear side door window outer sealing strip, trim the retaining clips and reinstall the strip following the steps below:

Note
To eliminate the likelihood of damaging the sealing strip during its removal, remove the rear side door window first.

1. Remove the rear side door window. Refer to Rear Side Door Window Replacement in SI.
2. Remove the rear side door window outer sealing strip:

1. Remove the screw retaining the front of the sealing strip to the door structure.

2. Working from the front of the door rearward, reach through the window opening to release the sealing strip retainers while pulling upward to remove the sealing strip.

3. For some of the retainers that may be more difficult to access or exhibit higher retention, use an appropriate tool to help disengage the retainer.

Note
The graphic above shows an example of an original length retainer (1) next to one which has been trimmed (2).

3. Trim 2.5-4 mm (0.10-0.16 in) off the length of all five sealing strip retainers.
4. Reinstall the rear side door window outer sealing strip:

1. Position the sealing strip to the window opening flange so that the front fastener location and all retaining tabs are aligned with the appropriate holes in the door structure.

2. Starting at rear of the door, push the sealing strip down onto the opening flange until the retainers are fully seated.
3. Reinstall the screw retaining the front of the sealing strip to the door structure.

Important
Before reinstalling the rear side door window, inspect the exterior glass surface for any vertical scratches. Clean the glass with glass cleaner and if scuffs or scratches are found, it may be necessary to replace the window.

5. Install the rear side door window. Refer to Rear Side Door Window Replacement, in SI.
