Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR)
Diagnostic Chart:
Circuit Schematic:
WARNING: During service procedures, be very careful when handling a sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). Never strike or jar the sum. never power up the sir system when the sum is not rigidly attached to the vehicle. All SDM and mounting bracket fasteners must be carefully torqued and the arrow must be pointing toward the front of the vehicle to ensure proper operation of the sir system. The sum could be activated when powered while not rigidly attached to the vehicle which could cause deployment and result in personal injury.
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
When there is a frontal crash of sufficient force, up to 30 degrees off the centerline of the vehicle, the ADM will cause enough current to flow to deploy the air bag and will set DTC 51. At this time the ADM will record information regarding SIR system status and vehicle status in EEPROM. DTC 52 will set when the SDM has stored information regarding two frontal crash events.
DTC WILL SET WHEN:
The ADM attempts to store frontal crash information and finds the EEPROM data area full. This test is run each time the ADM stores or attempts to store information regarding a frontal crash event and also during the "Turn-On" tests.
ACTION TAKEN:
SDM turns On the AIR BAG warning lamp, and sets a diagnostic trouble code.
DTC WILL CLEAR WHEN:
A scan tool "Clear Codes" command is received by the ADM. If, at the next ignition On after receiving a "Clear Codes" command, the ADM detects the data area is full, a history diagnostic trouble code is set. This allows the AIR BAG warning lamp to illuminate should any additional malfunctions be detected.
DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
