Odometer Inspection Procedure

Select the appropriate testing procedure, depending on the type of Scan tool being used for inspection.

Odometer Inspection Using Saturn Portable Diagnostic Tool (PDT) Scan Tool

1. Connect PDT to data link connector (DLC).

2. Ignition key On, engine Off.

3. Press odometer reset button to change to trip odometer display.

4. Reset trip odometer by pressing, and holding reset button in for one-to-two seconds, until odometer display reads "0.0".

5. From the PDT main menu, select the following menu options:

A. Special Test

B. Instrument Panel

C. Speedometer

6. Operate speedometer at 15 MPH, as shown on PDT display, and observe the trip odometer.

^ If the trip odometer increments by 0.1 in less than 20 seconds, the odometer is correctly recording kilometers and no replacement of the instrument cluster assembly is necessary. Affix the Campaign Completion Label on a clean, dry surface of the radiator core support. (Refer to "Campaign Completion Label" procedure in this bulletin.)

^ If the trip odometer takes longer than 20 seconds to increment by 0.1, the odometer is recording miles instead of kilometers and the instrument cluster assembly must be replaced.

^ Record mileage from odometer display.

^ Refer to the following "Instrument Cluster Assembly Replacement Procedure" to replace the instrument cluster assembly.

Odometer Inspection Using Tech II Scan Tool

1. Connect TECH II to data link connector (DLC) and power On TECH II.

2. Ignition key On, engine Off.

3. Press odometer reset button to change to trip odometer display.

4. Reset trip odometer by pressing, and holding reset button in for one-to-two seconds, until odometer display reads "0.0".

5. From the TECH II main menu, select the following menu options:

A. Diagnostics

B. 98 Model Year

C. Saturn

D. Powertrain

E. Special Functions

F. Engine Output Controls

G. Dash Lamps and Gages

H. Press right arrow key to page down, then select Speedometer Gage.

6. Press the "Increase" button two times to command 15 MPH, and observe the trip odometer.

Instrument Cluster Assembly Replacement Procedure

Important
Digital instrument cluster assemblies must be programmed with the correct vehicle kilometers at the time of installation. Make sure to record the mileage from the odometer display prior to removing the instrument cluster assembly. Failure to properly program a new instrument cluster will result in the display being programmed to zero kilometers.

1. Disable the SIR system. (Refer to "Disabling the SIR System" in the revised "1998 Audio System and I/P Cluster Service Manual.")

2. Remove screws from the data link connector (DLC) and steering column filler panel.

3. Remove hood release cable from lever.

4. Remove steering column filler panel.

5. Disconnect ignition switch electrical connector at right steering column bolt.

6. Remove steering column bolts and lower steering column so that the steering wheel rests on front seat.

7. Remove fasteners and pull instrument cluster trim bezel rearward at clip locations.

8. Disconnect electrical connector from instrument panel dimmer switch.

9. Remove connector position assurance (CPA) devices and disconnect electrical connectors from instrument cluster assembly. (To remove electrical connectors, squeeze tabs on each side of electrical connector while pulling connectors towards front of vehicle.)

10. Remove front and rear instrument cluster assembly screws.

11. Remove instrument cluster assembly.

12. Install new instrument cluster assembly.

13. Install and tighten instrument cluster assembly screws.

14. Connect electrical connectors to instrument cluster assembly.

15. Install CPA devices to electrical connectors.

16. Connect electrical connector to instrument panel dimmer switch.

17. Install instrument cluster trim bezel. Push in at clip locations.

18. Install push pin fasteners.

19. Raise steering column into position.

20. Install and torque steering column bolts.

Tighten 35 Nm (26 lb ft)

21. Connect ignition switch electrical connector at right steering column bolt.

22. Install hood release cable to lever.

23. Install steering column filler panel and data link connector (DLC).

24. Install and tighten screws.

25. Enable the SIR system. (Refer to "Enabling the SIR System" in the revised "1998 Audio System and I/P Cluster Service Manual.")

Instrument Cluster Assembly Odometer Programming Procedure

Notice
New instrument clusters with an LCD digital odometer must be programmed with the correct kilometers before the vehicle is driven, or a road speed is commanded by a scan tool. Once the odometer programming procedure is completed or the cluster detects a speed signal the kilometers will be stored in memory and cannot be changed.

Important
The programming procedure must be followed in the exact order as specified or odometer programming will not be successful.

1. Convert the mileage recorded from the original instrument cluster assembly to kilometers, using the following equation: miles x 1.609 = kilometers (example: 700 miles x 1.609 = 1126 kilometers).

2. Turn the ignition switch On.

3. Select the season odometer mode (six digits displayed).

4. Press the odometer reset button and hold for 10 ,seconds or more, then release the button. When the button is released, a single "0" will appear in the right most digit.

Important
The odometer must be programmed with the highest place value being programmed first (e.g., a vehicle with 5367 kilometers would have the "5" being programmed first, and the "7" last). It is not necessary to program the leading zeros.

5. Press and release the reset button (for less than one second) to increment the digit. Continue pressing and releasing the reset button until desired digit is displayed.

6. When the desired digit is displayed, press and hold the reset button for several seconds (but less than 10 seconds). Release the button and the digit will shift left one position with a "0" once again appearing in the right most position.

7. Repeat steps 7 and 8 until the correct vehicle kilometers is set.

Important
Odometer programming procedure can be aborted by turning Off the ignition and disconnecting the battery before performing step 8.

8. With the correct vehicle kilometers displayed, press and hold the odometer reset button for 15 seconds. When the reset button is released, leading zeros will appear and gages will drop momentarily, indicating programming has been completed successfully.

9. Turn the ignition Off for five or more seconds.

10. Turn the ignition On and verify new mileage is correct. For further service information, refer to the "1998 Revised Audio System and I/P Cluster Service Manual."

11. Affix the Campaign Completion Label on a clean, dry surface of the radiator core support. (Refer to "Campaign Completion Label" procedure in this bulletin.
