Catalytic Converter: Description and Operation

This vehicle uses a dual warm-up, three-way oxidation catalytic converter system. The catalysts coatings contain Platinum and Rhodium. The three-way catalytic converters are emission control devices added to the exhaust system to reduce pollutants from the exhaust gas stream. This converter system reduces levels of Oxides Of Nitrogen (NOx), Hydrocarbons (HC), and Carbon Monoxide (CO) from the emission gas. The system is monitored using the heated rear O2 sensors. During testing of the catalytic converter, the ECM varies the air/fuel ratio in order to vary the amount of oxygen content of the exhaust gas, and indicate whether the catalytic system is functioning properly.
