RKE Transmitter - Operation/Programming Difficulties

BULLETIN NO.: 00-T-10

ISSUE DATE: February, 2000

CATEGORY TYPE: Electrical-01

CATEGORY: Locks & Security

CORPORATION NO.: 00-08-52-001

SUBJECT:
Intermittent Operation and/or Difficulty Programming Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Transmitter (Verify RKE Transmitter Part Number and Reprogram RKE Transmitter Using Updated Process)

MODELS AFFECTED:
2000 Saturn S-Series vehicles equipped with RKE (RPO AU0)

CONDITION

Some customers and technicians may experience intermittent remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitter operation while inside vehicle. Technicians may also experience difficulty in programming RKE transmitters.

CAUSE

Intermittent RKE transmitter operation and/or difficulty programming may be caused by the RKE transmitter being too close to the body control module (BCM) during usage or a reprogramming attempt. If the RKE transmitter is too close to the BCM, the RKE transmitter may "overdrive" the RKE receiver located in the BCM. This can result in an unsuccessful programming attempt and no RKE operation.

No operation of RKE transmitter may also be caused by trying to program an incorrect P/N RKE transmitter into the vehicle.

CORRECTION

Ensure that the RKE transmitter is at least 1.2 meters (4 feet) from the BCM during operation or a programming attempt. Refer to procedure in this bulletin to verify proper RKE transmitter programming and operation.

PROCEDURE:

IMPORTANT:
2000 model year S-Series RKE transmitters will only operate when programmed to a 2000 model year S-Series vehicle. 1999 and earlier model year S-Series RKE transmitters will only operate when programmed to a 1999 and earlier model year S-Series vehicle.

IMPORTANT:
Although the RKE transmitter P/N has a "-99" after it, this number does not indicate any model year usage information. The "-99" indicates the range of P/Ns from 16263074 to 16263099. On 2000 model year S-Series vehicles, Saturn uses the first P/N in that range.

1. Inspect the P/N on the back of the RKE transmitter intended to be programmed into the BCM.

^ If P/N is 16263074-99, RKE transmitter is for a 2000 model year S-Series vehicle.

^ If P/N is any number other than 16263074-99, RKE transmitter is not for a 2000 model year S-Series vehicle. Obtain the correct P/N RKE transmitter and program to match vehicle

IMPORTANT:
During RKE transmitter programming, ensure that RKE transmitter is kept at least 1.2 meters (4 feet) from the BCM. Refer to illustration for BCM location.

2. Use the Tech 2 to program RKE transmitter into the BCM. (Refer to "Program Key FOBs" in the 2000 Body Special Functions section of the Tech 2 User Guide.)

3. Perform RKE System Check to ensure proper operation. (Refer to "Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System Check" in the Locks and Security section of the 2000 S-Series Body/Electrical Volume II Service Manual.)
