SUBJECT:
Loose or Detached Inner Mirror Trim Panel Assembly
(Install Shims on Mirror Trim Panel Assembly Tabs)

MODELS AFFECTED:

2000 and 2001 Saturn S-Series Sedans and Wagons

CONDITION:

Customers may comment that the inner mirror trim panel assembly on either the left or right side is loose or detached from the door. Customers may also comment about a rattle noise coming from the inner mirror trim panel area.

CAUSE:

Retainers that are fastened to tabs on back of inner mirror trim panel, assembly do not completely engage the door sheet metal. Also, tabs may be broken off of mirror trim panel.

CORRECTION:

Follow the procedure in this bulletin to replace broken mirror trim panel, if necessary, and install a shim onto each tab on the mirror trim panel assembly.

PROCEDURE:





1. Remove mirror trim panel by firmly pulling on panel to disengage attaching clips. If removing mirror trim panel on driver's side manual remote mirror, loosen set screw and disconnect cable from trim panel.

2. Inspect mirror trim panel for broken tabs.

^ If no tabs are broken, continue with step 3.

^ If any tabs are broken, discard trim panel and perform steps 3 through 9 using new mirror trim panel.

3. Remove metal attaching clips from both tabs on mirror trim panel.





4. Trim two shims (P/N 21109901) to 3 cm (1.18 in.) as shown in illustration.

5. Make a 2.2 cm (0.87 in.) long cut down the middle of each shim as shown in illustration.

6. Install shim over each tab on mirror trim panel and push shim down until fully seated.





7. Install new attaching clip (P/N 21303269) on each tab.





8. If manual remote mirror cable was removed from trim panel, install mirror cable into trim panel and tighten set screw.

Torque:
Manual Mirror Cable-to-Trim Panel Set
Screw: 3 N.m (27 in-lbs)

9. Install mirror trim panel to appropriate door by positioning panel and pressing until attaching clips engage.
