Rocker Arm Assembly: Service and Repair

ROCKER ARM AND/OR VALVE LASH ADJUSTER REPLACEMENT (IN-VEHICLE)

TOOLS REQUIRED
- J43655 Camshaft Sprocket Holding Tool

NOTICE: The Camshaft Sprocket Holding Tool J43655 must be used to remove one or both camshafts at the same time. The engine's crankshaft can not be rotated with the camshaft(s) removed.

The L61 engine camshafts, rocker arms, valve lash adjusters, valve springs, and seals can be serviced without removing the exhaust system, vibration damper, front mount, or front cover. The following procedure must be followed to prevent damage to the camshafts, lash adjusters, cylinder head, and lower timing chain guides.

REMOVAL

1. Remove camshaft(s).
2. Remove rocker arms.

3. Remove valve lash adjusters.

INSTALLATION
1. Install valve lash adjusters.

2. Install rocker arms.

3. Install camshafts.

NOTICE: After cylinder block, head or lifter replacement, it will be necessary to allow the engine to idle for three to five minutes. If lifters are noisy, warm the engine up at a low rpm (less than 2000). After the coolant temperature has reached approximately 85 degrees C (185 degrees F), cycle the engine rpm from idle to 3000 for approximately 10 minutes or drive the vehicle eight kilometers (five miles) to purge the air. If the air cannot be purged, the faulty lifter(s) will have to be replaced.

Lifters that are pumped up may cause PCM misfire codes to set. Continue to operate the engine until the lifters bleed down. Using the scan tool, clear codes and malfunction history.
