Transaxle Fluid Fill Inspection and Replacement Procedure

Transaxle Fluid Fill Inspection Procedure

Caution
Make sure the vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned on the hoist. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support to the opposite end of the vehicle from which components will be removed.

Important
Use a funnel with a flexible hose to add the fluid to the transaxle.

1. Raise the hood, position a funnel and route the transaxle fluid filler hose down through the engine compartment near the power brake booster in the area of the transaxle fill plug.

2. Raise the vehicle. The vehicle must be level. Refer to "Lifting, Jacking, and Support Points" in the 2002 L-Series Manual Transaxle Service Manual.

Caution
If the transaxle fluid is hot, caution must be taken to prevent personal injury in the event transaxle fluid does drain from the fill plug hole after the fill plug is removed.

3. Remove the transaxle fill plug and insert a flexible filler hose into the fill plug hole.

4. Starting with a full unopened container of transaxle lubricant (P/N 21018899(, add fluid (up to 1 quart) until the fluid runs out of the fill plug hole.

^ If one quart or less was added to the transaxle and the fluid drained out of the fill plug hole, no other repairs are necessary. Proceed to step 5.

^ If one quart of fluid was added and no fluid drained out of the fill plug hole, the transaxle need to be replaced. Proceed to "Transaxle Replacement Procedure" step 8, in this campaign.

5. Allow any excess fluid to finish draining from the fill plug hole. Apply thread sealant (P/N 21485278) to fill the plug and install. Wipe any excess fluid from the transaxle with a rag or a shop towel.

Tighten

Tighten the fill plug to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).

6. Lower the vehicle.

7. Affix the Campaign Completion Label on a clean and dry surface of the radiator core support, in an area clearly visible when the hood is raised. For more information, refer to Campaign Completion Label in this bulletin.

Transaxle Replacement Procedure

1. To replace the transaxle, refer to "Transaxle Removal and Installation" procedures in the 2002 L-Series Manual Transaxle Service Manual.

Important
Before the replacement transaxle is installed it will be necessary to bleed the clutch hydraulic system. Refer to "Clutch Hydraulic System Bleeding" procedure in the Clutch section of the 2002 Manual Transaxle Service Manual.

2. Once the transaxle has been replaced, it will be necessary to perform a front wheel toe alignment on the vehicle. Refer to "Front Wheel Toe Alignment" procedure in the Alignment, Wheels, and Tires section of the 2002 L-Series Chassis Service Manual.

3. Road test the vehicle to verify alignment and proper transaxle operation.

4. Affix the Campaign Completion Label on a clean and dry surface of the radiator core support, in an area clearly visible when the hood is raised. For more information, refer to Campaign Completion Label in this bulletin.
