Attention: Technician
This bulletin is being revised to update the models affected. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 03-08-44-016 (Section 08 - Body & Accessories).
Condition:
Some customers may comment that their CDs will skip in the CD player. This concern is more noticeable while driving on smooth roads. This condition may affect vehicles with the single CD/tuner unit (RPO U1C) illustrated.
Cause:
The original factory radio does not have a memory buffer to reduce CD skipping. The installation angle of the CD/tuner unit may cause skipping on some CDs. It has also been observed that the ION chassis/body may create a harmonic vibration, which coupled with the installation angle of the CD/tuner unit may also cause some CDs to skip.
Correction:
Verify that the condition occurs on more than one CD. If the condition is duplicated on more than one CD, install new radio assembly using part number listed in bulletin. The new CD/tuner unit has a memory buffer to reduce the possibility of any skips being heard when playing CDs.
Service Procedure:
Important:
Make certain that at least one of the CDs that are skipping has the "Compact Disc Digital Audio" label on it. Some CDs a customer may create or "burn" may be more prone to skipping.
1. Verify that skipping occurs on more than one CD.
2. If skipping is duplicated on more than one CD, replace radio unit assembly.
3. Remove radio assembly using removal procedures in appropriate model year Saturn Body & Accessories Service Manual.
4. Remove jumper harness from the back of the old radio and retain harness for use with the new service radio.
5. Remove and discard the jumper harness from the new service radio.
6. Install jumper harness that was removed from old radio onto new service radio as shown in illustration.
7. Replace radio assembly using replacement procedures in the appropriate model year Saturn Body & Accessories Service Manual.
