AF23-5 Transaxle Replacement and TCM Reprogramming

This bulletin is being revised to include additional authorizations and information for replacing 2003 model year transaxles with 2004 model year transaxles. Please discard bulletin 03-07-30-030 (Section 07 - Transmission/Transaxle).





Purpose:
The purpose of this bulletin is to provide transaxle replacement guidelines for 2003 model year Saturn ION sedans equipped with AF23-5 transaxles. Refer to the replacement guidelines shown.

The information contained in this bulletin provides the necessary reprogramming requirements that must be performed when installing a 2004 model year transaxle assembly in place of a 2003 model year transaxle assembly or when installing a 2003 model year 2nd design transaxle assembly in place of a 2003 model year 1st design transaxle assembly.

Notice:
Ensure the proper TCM reprogramming is performed after:

^ Replacing a 2003 model year AF23-5 transaxle assembly with a 2004 model year AF23-5 transaxle assembly, or

^ Replacing a 2003 model year 1st design AF23-5 transaxle assembly with a 2003 model year 2nd design AF23-5 transaxle assembly

Failure to reprogram the TCM will cause transaxle damage.

When replacing a 2003 model year AF23-5 transaxle (P/N 24219881, 24224464, 24224483, 24226999, or 24228580) with a 2004 model year AF23-5 transaxle, it is necessary to reprogram the TCM using 2004 model year calibrations. The calibrations for the two model years of the AF23-5 transaxle are not interchangeable. Usee the appropriate Reprogramming Guide below to determine the correct TCM calibration.

When replacing a 2003 model year 1st design AF23-5 transaxle (P/N 24219881, 24224464, or 24224483) with a 2003 model year 2nd design AF23-5 transaxle, it is necessary to reprogram the TCM using 2003 model year 2nd design calibrations. The calibrations for each of the AF23-5 transaxles are not interchangeable. Use the appropriate Reprogramming Guide below to determine the correct TCM calibration.

When replacing a 2003 model year 1st design AF23-5 original equipment (production) transaxle (P/N 24219881 or 24224464) with a 2003 model year 1st design AF23-5 service transaxle (P/N 24224483), it is not necessary to reprogram the TCM. However, 1st design service transaxles cannot be used to replace 2nd design original equipment (production) or service transaxles (P/N 24226999 or 24228580).
