Torque Converter End Play Inspection

Tools Required
^ SA9179NE Dial Indicator
^ J8001 Dial Indicator Set
^ J45051 Torque Converter End Play Checking Tool





1. Position the torque converter with the flywheel lugs facing down.
2. Install the SA9179NE (1) and J45051 (2) and J8001 (3) onto the torque converter.
3. Set the dial indicator to zero.
4. Pull up on the J45051 (2) handle.
5. Inspect the reading on the SA9179NE (1).
The correct end play is 0.5 mm (0.02 inch) or less.
6. Repeat this procedure several times in order to get an accurate measurement.
7. Replace the torque converter if the end play is too high.
8. Inspect the torque converter assembly for the following:
^ External damage
^ Metal particles found after flushing the oil cooler and the cooler lines
^ External leaks in the hub weld area
^ The torque converter pilot is damaged or fits poorly into the crankshaft,
^ Internal failure of the stator roller clutch
^ A damaged or worn torque converter bushing
^ Contamination from the engine coolant
^ Stripped bolt threads
