Backing Plate: Service and Repair

BACKING PLATE

- SA9151BR Park Brake Cable Release

REMOVAL

CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON THE HOIST. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.

1. Raise vehicle on hoist.





2. Remove rear wheel and tire assembly.
3. Disassemble rear drum brakes.
4. Using special tool Park Brake Cable Release SA9151BR (or equivalent) remove parking brake cable from backing plate.





5. Disconnect brake pipe at wheel cylinder.
6. Remove wheel cylinder retaining fasteners and remove cylinder from backing plate.





7. Remove rear axle nut, if equipped with all-wheel drive.
8. Remove four hub and bearing assembly-to-knuckle bolts and remove hub and bearing assembly and backing plate from knuckle.

INSTALLATION
1. Position hub and bearing assembly and backing plate to knuckle and install four fasteners.
Torque:
Hub and Bearing-to-Knuckle: 82 Nm (61 ft. lbs.)

2. Install rear axle nut, if equipped with all-wheel drive.
Torque:
Rear Axle Nut: 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.)





3. Install wheel cylinder onto backing plate.
Torque:
Wheel Cylinder Bolts: 15 Nm (133 inch lbs.)

4. Connect brake pipe to wheel cylinder.
Torque:
Brake Pipe Nuts: 19 Nm (168 inch lbs.)





5. Install park brake cable into backing plate.
6. Completely assemble rear drum brake assembly.
7. Bleed brakes.

NOTICE: Before installing wheels, remove rust or corrosion from wheel mounting surfaces and brake drums. Failure to do so can cause wheel nuts to loosen in service.

8. Position wheel and tire assembly onto hub.
9. Install wheel nuts and tighten in a crisscross pattern. Repeat tightening pattern to be sure torque is correct.
Torque:
Wheel Nuts: 125 Nm (92 ft. lbs.)

10. Lower vehicle from hoist.
11. Apply and release brake pedal 20 times to allow adjuster to position brake shoes.
12. Adjust park brake cable.
