Transaxle Removal

TRANSAXLE REMOVAL (OFF-VEHICLE)

- J 36346 Fascia Retainer Remover
- J 43405
- J 44017 Intermediate Drive Shaft Removal Tool
- J 45341 Drive Axle Remover
- SA9105E Engine Support Fixture
- SA91 I OOC Tie Rod Separator
- SA9133T Axle Seal Puller
- SA9173G Slide Hammer

REMOVAL

IMPORTANT: Record all pre-set radio stations.

1. Ignition Off.
2. Remove battery cover.
3. Disconnect negative battery cable.





4. Install Engine Support Fixture SA9105E and J43405.





5. Fasten radiator to upper radiator support.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON THE HOIST. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.

6. Position vehicle on hoist and raise vehicle.





7. Remove wheels.
8. Remove left inner splash shield.
9. Remove ball joints.





10. Remove tie rod-outer to knuckle nut.





NOTICE: Hold ball stud from turning while removing nut. The boot can be damaged if the ball stud rotates. Discard nut.

NOTICE: Do not use wedge type tool to separate joint. Damage may occur to seal.

11. Separate tie rod from knuckle using Tie Rod Separator SA91 100C (or equivalent).





IMPORTANT: Discard pin.

12. Remove lower control arm ball stud cotter pin and nut.





13. Disengage ball stud from knuckle.





NOTICE: Do not allow stud to rotate. Secure link stud with wrench to remove nut.

14. Remove lower stabilizer bar links.
15. Remove steering gear from steering column assembly.
15.1. Remove rear transaxle mount-to-cradle bolts.
15.2. Remove rear transaxle mount bracket-to-transaxle bolts.
16. Remove front lower mount through bolt from cradle.

IMPORTANT: Front air dam deflector stays connected to cradle.

17. Remove front air dam deflector from body.
18. Place jack under cradle and remove cradle bolts.
19. Carefully remove cradle from vehicle.





NOTICE: Do not use too much force when disconnecting the shift cables or damage may result.

20. Disconnect shift lever cables from shift control housing by prying with even pressure using a Fascia Retainer Remover J36346 (or equivalent).
21. Disconnect shift lever cables from shift lever cable bracket.





22. Disconnect pressure line from clutch actuator cylinder by removing C-clip then pulling line away from clutch actuator cylinder.





23. Disconnect back-up lamp switch (1) and front wheel speed sensor (2).





24. Drain transaxle fluid.
25. Remove front transaxle mount from transaxle.
25.1. Disengage right drive axle from intermediate drive shaft (IDS) using Drive Axle Remover J45341 and Slide Hammer SA9173G.
25.2. Secure drive axle away from IDS.
25.3. Remove IDS bearing retainer-to-support bracket bolts.

NOTICE: Remove retainer ring from stub shaft prior to toot installation. Discard ring.

26. Remove intermediate drive shaft. Use Intermediate Drive Shaft Removal Tool J44017 and Axle Seal Puller SA9133T if IDS is difficult to remove.





27. Remove left drive axle with Drive Axle Remover J45341 and Slide Hammer SA9173G.
28. Secure drive axle out of the way.
29. Remove bolts from top transaxle mount.
30. Lower vehicle.
31. Lower transaxle with engine support fixture enough to remove transaxle.
32. Raise vehicle.
33. Secure transaxle to transaxle jack.





34. Remove transaxle housing bolts on engine side.
35. Remove transaxle housing bolt on transaxle side.
36. Lower transaxle support stand.
