Power Take-Off Unit (PTU) Assembly
POWER TAKE-OFF UNIT (PTU) ASSEMBLY^ TOOLS REQUIRED
- J44017 Shaft Remover
- SA9133T Slide Hammer
REMOVAL
CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON THE HOIST. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE OPPOSITE FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.
NOTICE: On V6 vehicles only, disconnect negative battery cable from battery. Note radio preset stations and reset radio stations after re-connecting battery.
1. Hoist vehicle
2. Remove right hand axle
IMPORTANT: Remove retainer ring from stub shaft for tool installation Discard used retainer ring.
IMPORTANT: Use proper container for fluid loss when the stub shaft is removed Plug PTU to minimize fluid loss.
3. Disengage PTU stub shaft from PTU using Shaft Remover J44017 and Slide Hammer SA9133T
4. Remove propshaft center bearing to underbody bolts.
IMPORTANT: Index mark the propshaft to PTU for re-installation.
5. Remove front propshaft attachment bolts.
6. Compress CV joint and disengage propshaft from PTU and secure with wire.
7. Remove steering gear pinion to I-shaft bolt and disconnect I-shaft. Discard used bolt.
8. Remove steering gear mounting bolts.
9. Move steering gear upwards for clearance.
10. Remove rear powertrain mount bracket bolts from PTU.
11. Remove PTU brace bolts and remove brace.
12. Remove PTU to transmission bolts.
13. Remove PTU vent hose.
CAUTION: TO AVOID OIL LOSS WHEN REMOVING THE PTU. POSITION THE ASSEMBLY ONLY IN THE UPRIGHT (IN-VEHICLE) POSITION.
14. Remove PTU.
