Brake Caliper: Service and Repair

FRONT CALIPER

REMOVAL

CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON THE HOIST. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.

1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
2. Remove wheel and tire assembly corresponding to caliper being removed.

IMPORTANT: Before removing brake hose from caliper assembly, remove all dirt from brake hose and caliper assemblies. Failure to do so may cause brake fluid contamination.

3. Remove brake hose from caliper. Plug openings in caliper and brake hose to avoid fluid loss and contamination.
4. Remove caliper guide pin bolts.

5. Remove caliper from caliper bracket, being careful not to damage guide pin boots.
6. Remove guide pin assemblies from caliper bracket.
6.1 Inspect guide pin boots for deterioration. If damaged, replace.
6.2 Inspect guide pins for damage or corrosion. Replace if damaged or corroded. (Do not attempt to clean away corrosion.)
6.3 Inspect piston boots for deterioration. If damaged, replace caliper.

INSTALLATION

IMPORTANT: Make sure caliper pistons are bottomed fully in caliper bore. Use a C-clamp to seat piston if necessary.

IMPORTANT: Leave pad in to compress caliper pistons.

^ Using a C-clamp, bottom pistons all the way into caliper bore.

IMPORTANT: Boots must lie flat, below the level of the piston face.

IMPORTANT: Make sure brake pads and brake clips are correctly installed in caliper bracket.

IMPORTANT: Remove rust and corrosion from caliper brackets and spring clips. If installing used brake pads, remove rust and corrosion from ends of brake pads. Make sure brake pads move freely in caliper brackets when brakes are assembled.
1. Lubricate guide pins with silicone grease.

2. Install guide pin and boot assemblies into caliper bracket.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage piston boots and guide pin boots during caliper installation.

IMPORTANT: Compress guide pin boots by hand as caliper moves into position.

3. Install caliper body onto caliper bracket.
4. Install caliper bolts.
Torque:
Guide Pin-to-Brake Caliper: 32 Nm (24 lb ft)

NOTICE: Incorrect front brake hose installation could bring hose in contact with wheel. Brake failure could result.

5. Install brake hose to caliper with new washers.
Torque:
Brake Hose-to-Caliper (use new washer): 44 Nm (32 lb ft)

6. Bleed brakes.

NOTICE: Before installing wheels, remove rust or corrosion from wheel mounting surfaces and brake rotors. Failure to do so can cause wheel nuts to loosen in service.

7. Position wheel and tire assembly onto hub.
8. Install wheel nuts and tighten in a crisscross pattern.
Repeat tightening pattern to be sure torque is correct.
Torque:
Wheel Nut: 125 Nm (92 lb ft)

9. Lower vehicle from hoist.
