Wheel Cylinder: Service and Repair

WHEEL CYLINDER

REMOVAL

CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON THE HOIST. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.

1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
2. Disassemble rear drum brake assembly.





3. Disconnect brake pipe at wheel cylinder.





4. Remove wheel cylinder retaining fasteners and remove cylinder from backing plate.

INSTALLATION
1. Install new wheel cylinder onto backing plate.
Torque:
Wheel Cylinder Bolts: 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.)





2. Connect brake pipe onto wheel cylinder.
Torque:
Brake Pipe Nuts: 19 Nm (148 ft. lbs.)

3. Completely assemble rear drum brake assembly.
4. Bleed brakes.

NOTICE: Before installing wheels, remove rust or corrosion from wheel mounting surfaces and brake drums. Failure to do so can cause wheel nuts to loosen in service.

5. Position wheel and tire assembly onto hub.
6. Install wheel nuts and tighten in a crisscross pattern. Repeat tightening pattern to be sure torque is correct.
Torque:
Wheel Nut: 125 Nm (92 ft. lbs.)

7. Lower vehicle from hoist.
8. Apply and release brake pedal 20 times to allow adjuster to position brake shoes.
9. Adjust park brake cable.
