FORWARD AND DIRECT CLUTCH ASSEMBLY DISASSEMBLE

^ TOOLS REQUIRED
- J 25024-A Servo Piston/Clutch Spring Compressor
- J 28585 Snap Ring Remover
- J 45186 Forward and Direct Clutch Spring Compressor

1. Remove input shaft O-ring seal from forward and direct clutch and input shaft assembly.

2. Remove forward clutch housing thrust bearing and forward clutch housing thrust bearing race.

3. Using Snap Ring Remover J28585, remove retaining ring (550) from forward clutch backing plate.

4. Remove following components from forward clutch:
^ Backing plate (551)
^ Fiber plates (552)
^ Steel plates (553)
5. Perform clutch plate inspection:

Composition Plates
Dry the plates and inspect plates for the following conditions:
^ Pitting
^ Flaking
^ Wear
^ Glazing
^ Cracking
^ Charring
^ Chips or metal particles embedded in lining
Replace a composition plate which shows any of these conditions.

Steel Plates

IMPORTANT: If clutch shows evidence of extreme heat or burning, replace springs.

Wipe plates dry and check plates for heat discoloration. If surfaces are smooth, even if color smear is indicated, the plate can be reused. If plate is discolored with heat spots or if surface is scuffed, replace plate.

Causes of Burned Clutch Plates
The following conditions can result in a burned clutch plate:
^ Incorrect usage of clutch plates
^ Engine coolant in transaxle fluid
^ A cracked clutch piston
^ Damaged or missing seals
^ Low line pressure
^ Valve conditions
- Valve body face is not flat
- Porosity between channels
- Checkballs are misplaced
^ Teflon@ seal rings are worn or damaged

6. Using Snap Ring Remover J28585, remove direct clutch backing plate retaining ring (554) from direct clutch.

7. Remove following components from direct clutch:
^ Backing plate (555)
^ Fiber plates (556)
^ Steel plates (557)
^ Apply plate (558)

9. Install Forward and Direct Clutch Spring Compressor J45186 and Servo Piston/Clutch Spring Compressor J25024-A onto the spring retainer and compress spring with a shop press.
10. Place in a vice, holding by servo piston/clutch spring compressor.
11. Remove direct clutch spring retaining ring.
12. Remove tools.

13. Remove direct clutch spring assembly.

CAUTION: WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN USING COMPRESSED AIR IN ORDER TO PREVENT EYE INJURY.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage case cover seal rings.

14. Install input shaft assembly into case cover. While pulling the piston by hand, apply compressed air into (C I) oil passage in order to remove direct clutch piston.

15. Remove direct clutch piston inner seal (561) and direct clutch piston outer seal (563) from direct clutch piston (562).

CAUTION: WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN USING COMPRESSED AIR IN ORDER TO PREVENT EYE INJURY.

16. While pulling upward on forward clutch piston by hand, apply compressed air into (C 1) oil passage in order to remove forward clutch piston (565).

17. Remove forward clutch piston inner seal (564) and forward clutch piston outer seat (566) from forward clutch piston (565).
