11. Forward and Direct Clutch Assembly Assemble

FORWARD AND DIRECT CLUTCH ASSEMBLY ASSEMBLE

^ TOOLS REQUIRED
- J 25024-A Servo Piston/Clutch Spring Compressor
- J 45186 Forward and Direct Clutch Spring Compressor





IMPORTANT: Soak new clutch discs in transaxle fluid for at least 2 hours before installation.

1. Inspect sliding surface of disc and plate for being worn or burnt. Replace disc if it is worn or burnt.
2. Shake the piston to be sure check ball is free.

CAUTION: WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN USING COMPRESSED AIR IN ORDER TO PREVENT EYE INJURY.

3. Apply compressed air to valve to be sure it is not leaking.





4. Apply transaxle fluid to the new forward clutch piston O-rings.
5. Install forward clutch piston inner seal (564) and forward clutch piston outer seal (566) onto forward clutch piston (565).
6. Apply automatic transaxle fluid to inner surface of forward clutch drum.

IMPORTANT: Be careful not to damage O-rings during installation.

7. Press forward clutch piston into drum.





8. Apply transaxle fluid to the new direct clutch piston O-rings.
9. Install direct clutch piston inner seal (561) and direct clutch piston outer seal (563) onto direct clutch piston (562).
10. Apply transaxle fluid to inner surface of forward clutch.
11. Press direct clutch piston (562) into forward clutch piston.





12. Install direct clutch spring assembly onto direct clutch piston.





IMPORTANT: Do not align end gap of snap ring with spring retainer claw.

13. Place Forward and Direct Clutch Spring Compressor J45186 and Servo Piston/Clutch Spring Compressor J25024-A on spring retainer, and compress spring with a shop press.
14. Install direct clutch spring retaining ring in groove of input shaft assembly.





IMPORTANT: Make sure direct clutch apply plate is facing the correct direction.

15. Install direct clutch cushion plate.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you have the correct number of plates, and they are installed in proper direction.

16. Install direct clutch steel (557) and fiber plates (556).
17. Install direct clutch backing plate (555).





IMPORTANT: Make sure the end gap of direct clutch snap ring is not aligned with any of the cut-outs.

18. Install direct clutch backing plate retaining ring (554) into groove.





IMPORTANT: Make sure you have the correct number of plates, and they are installed in the proper order.

19. Install forward clutch steel (553) and fiber plates (532).
20. Install forward clutch backing plate (5 5 1).





IMPORTANT: Make sure the end gap of forward clutch snap ring is not aligned with any of the cut-outs.

21. Install forward clutch backing plate retaining ring (550) into groove.





22. Install forward clutch housing thrust bearing race (568) and forward clutch housing thrust bearing (569).





23. Apply transaxle fluid to new seal ring.
24. Install new input shaft O-ring seal into the groove of forward and direct clutch housing and input shaft assembly.
