Pinion Seal
PINION SEAL^ TOOLS REQUIRED

REMOVAL
CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON THE HOIST. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON THE HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE OPPOSITE FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.
l. Raise vehicle.
IMPORTANT: Index mark propshaft rear flange to rear drive module flange for reassembly.
2. Remove propshaft rear flange attachment fasteners.
IMPORTANT: Index mark propshaft front flange to power take-off unit (PTU) flange for re-assembly.
3. Remove front frame flange attachment bolts.
4. Remove propshaft center bearing to underbody bolts.
5. Move propshaft forward in car to disengage rear flange from rear drive module. Remove propshaft from vehicle.
6. Remove propshaft guard to rear drive module bolts and remove guard.
NOTICE: Discard used nut.
7. Remove pinion nut and flange.
8. Remove seal from rear drive module.
INSTALLATION
1. Install new seal into rear drive module using Pinion Seal Installer J44851. Ensure seal is fully seated.
2. Install flange and new nut to the pinion shaft and tighten.
Torque:
Pinion Shaft Nut: 203 Nm (150 ft. lbs.)
3. Install propshaft guard to rear drive module and tighten.
Torque:
Propshaft Guard-to-Rear Drive Module Bolts: 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.)
4. Install propshaft to vehicle. Engage front CV joint into PTU.
5. Install propshaft center bearing bolts and hand tighten.
IMPORTANT: Align index mark from removal procedure.
IMPORTANT: Apply Permatex threadlocker - blue.
6. Align rear propshaft flange to rear drive module.
Torque:
Propshaft Rear Flange-to-Rear Drive Module Bolts: 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.)
IMPORTANT: Align index mark from removal procedure.
IMPORTANT: Ensure load bearing spreaders are in position, under bolt head.
IMPORTANT: Apply Permatex thread locker - blue on threads.
7. Hand start front attachment bolts and tighten.
Torque:
Propshaft to PTU Bolts: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
8. Tighten center bearing bolts.
Torque:
Center Bearing Bolts: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
9. Check fluid fill. Remove fluid fill plug, and fill until fluid is just below bottom of fill hole. Use only GM Versatrak fluid.
Torque:
Fluid Fill Plug: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)
10. Lower vehicle.
