Stub Axle Shaft
STUB AXLE SHAFT^ TOOLS REQUIRED

REMOVAL
1. Remove axle shaft hub nut and discard nut.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON THE HOIST. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.
2. Hoist vehicle.
3. Remove right wheel and tire assembly.
NOTICE: Hold ball stud from turning while removing nut. The boot can be damaged if the ball stud rotates. Discard nut.
4. Remove right-side outer tie rod-to-knuckle nut and discard nut.
NOTICE: Do not use wedge-type tool to separate joint. Damage may occur to seat.
5. Separate tie rod from knuckle using Tie Rod Separator SA91100C (or equivalent).
6. Remove right-side lower control arm ball stud cotter pin and nut, discard pin.
7. Disengage ball stud from knuckle.
NOTICE: Do not allow stud to rotate. Secure link stud with wrench to remove nut.
8. Remove right-side lower stabilizer bar link.
IMPORTANT: If difficulty is encountered, use a wood block and tap firmly with a hammer. Do not hammer directly on end of axle shaft.
9. Disengage right-side axle shaft from knuckle.
NOTICE: Use caution not to damage seal protector (slinger).
10. Disengage axle from PTU using Axle Shaft Remover J45341 and Slide Hammer SA9173G.
11. Remove stub shaft from PTU and axle. Plug PTU stub shaft hole to prevent fluid loss.
INSTALLATION
1. Install new stub shaft retaining rings.
2. Install stub shaft into PTU.
NOTICE: When installing axle into transaxle/PTU, use caution not to contact the oil seat with the axle shaft splines. Otherwise, damage may occur to seal.
3. Install drive axle to PTU stub shaft. Ensure axle is fully seated.
NOTICE: Use caution not to damage boots or seals.
4. Insert outer end of axle into knuckle.
5. Install lower control arm ball stud to knuckle.
6. Install nut and new cotter pin. Tighten nut one additional flat to align cotter pin hole if necessary. Secure cotter pin.
Torque: Control Arm Stud to Knuckle Nut: 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.) +150°
NOTICE: Do not allow stud to rotate. Secure link stud with wrench to install nut.
7. Install right-side lower stabilizer bar link.
8. Install new nut and tighten.
Torque: Nut-to-Stabilizer Bar Link: 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.)
9. Insert tie rod to knuckle. Install Installation Tool J44015 and tighten.
Torque: Tie Rod to Knuckle: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE: Do not allow stud to rotate while tightening nut. Damage may occur to seat.
10. Remove tool, install new nut and tighten.
Torque: Tie Rod End Nut: 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.)
11. Install right wheel and tire assembly.
12. Install wheel nuts and tighten in a crisscross pattern.
Torque: Wheel Nuts: 125 Nm (92 ft. lbs.)
13. Install new front axle shaft hub nut and tighten.
Torque: Front Axle Shaft Hub Nut: 205 Nm (151 ft. lbs.)
14. Lower vehicle.
15. Check alignment and align as necessary.
16. Check transaxle oil level and fill as required.
