REMOVAL
CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON THE HOIST. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.
1. Position vehicle on hoist and raise vehicle.
2. Remove transfer drain plug and drain transaxle.
3. Remove axle shaft hub nut and discard.
4. Remove right wheel and tire assembly.
NOTICE: Hole ball stud from turning while removing nut. The boot can be damaged if the ball stud rotates. Discard nut.
5. Remove right-side tie rod outer-to-knuckle nut.
NOTICE: Do not use wedge-type tool to separate joint. Damage may occur to seal.
6. Separate tie rod from knuckle.
7. Remove right-side lower control arm ball stud cotter pin and nut, discard pin.
8. Disengage ball stud from knuckle.
NOTICE: Do not allow stud to rotate. Secure link stud with wrench to remove nut.
9. Remove right-side lower stabilizer bar link.
IMPORTANT: If difficulty is encountered, use a wood block and tap firmly with a hammer. Do not hammer directly on end of axle.
10. Disengage right-side axle shaft from knuckle.
NOTICE: Use caution not to damage Seal Protector (Slinger) J45341.
NOTICE: Stub shaft may disengage from PTU and separate from axle. If so, plug PTU stub shaft hole to prevent fluid loss.
11. Disengage axle from power take-off unit (PTU).
12. Remove axle.
13. Remove PTU bracket connecting PTU to engine.
14. Remove PTU bolts.
15. Remove PTU.
16. Using Seal Remover Tool J45000 remove right drive axle seal from torque converter housing assembly.
INSTALLATION
1. Using Differential Output Shaft Oil Seal Installer J45187, install right drive axle seal onto torque converter housing assembly.
2. Install PTU onto transaxle.
3. Install PTU bolts.
Torque: PTU Retaining Bolts: 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.)
4. Install PTU bracket connecting PTU to engine.
5. Install PTU bracket retaining bolts.
Torque: PTU Bracket Retaining Bolts: 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.)
6. Install new stub shaft retaining rings.
7. Install stub shaft into transaxle.
NOTICE: When installing axle into transaxle/PTU, use caution not to contact the oil seal with the axle shaft splines. Damage to seal may occur.
8. Install drive axle to PTU shaft. Ensure axle is fully seated.
NOTICE: Use caution not to damage boots or seals.
9. Insert outer end of axle into knuckle.
10. Install lower control arm ball stud to knuckle.
11. Install nut and new cotter pin.
Torque: Nut: 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.) +150°
^ Tighten nut one additional flat to align cotter pin hole if necessary. Secure cotter pin.
NOTICE: Do not allow stud to rotate. Secure link stud with wrench to install nut.
12. Install right side lower stabilizer bar link. Install new nut and tighten.
Torque: Stabilizer Bar Link Nut: 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.)
13. Insert tie rod to knuckle. Install Installation Tool J44015 and tighten.
Torque: Tie Rod to Knuckle: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE: Do not allow stud to rotate while tightening nut. Damage may occur to seal.
14. Remove tool, and install new nut and tighten.
Torque: Tie Rod End Nut: 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.)
15. Install right wheel and tire assembly.
16. Install wheel nuts and tighten in a crisscross pattern.
Torque: Wheel Nuts: 125 Nm (92 ft. lbs.)
17. Install new front axle to knuckle nut and tighten.
Torque: Knuckle Nut: 205 Nm (151 ft. lbs.)
18. Lower vehicle.
19. Check alignment and align as necessary.
20. Fill transaxle to proper level using Saturn transaxle fluid P/N 22689186.
21. Verify fluid level.
