Steering Gear Replacement (Hydraulic Power Steering LY7)

Removal Procedure

Notice: Secure the steering wheel utilizing a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:

* The steering column

* The intermediate shaft

* The steering gear

After disconnecting these components, do not move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow these procedures may cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in possible damage to the SIR coil.

Turn the front wheels to the straight forward position and secure the steering wheel from moving.
1. Remove as much power steering fluid from the remote power steering fluid reservoir as possible.
2. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.
3. Disengage the rack and pinion outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.
4. Separate the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear.




5. Remove the steering gear heat shield from the steering gear.




6. Remove the transmission brace bolt.




7. Remove the transmission rear mount bolt and position the transmission brace aside.




8. Loosen the rear transmission mount bracket bolt.




9. Remove the 2 remaining transmission rear mount bolts.




10. Remove the 3 rear transmission mount bracket nuts.
11. Position the transmission rear mount and bracket aside.




12. Remove the power steering gear inlet hose bolt and disconnect the power steering gear inlet hose and the power steering gear outlet hose from the steering gear.
13. Remove the steering gear bolts, nuts, and washers from the steering gear.

Important: The position of the steering gear will need to be manipulated to remove it through the left front wheel opening.

14. Remove the steering gear through the left front wheel opening.
15. Transfer any parts as needed.

Installation Procedure

1. Install the steering gear through the left front wheel opening.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice.

Important: Start all of the bolts and nuts by hand before finalizing any torques.

2. Install the steering gear bolts, nuts, and washers to the steering gear.

Tighten the bolts and nuts to 110 N.m (81 lb ft).




3. Connect the power steering gear inlet hose and the power steering gear outlet hose to the steering gear and install the power steering gear inlet hose bolt.

Tighten the bolt to 27 N.m (20 lb ft).

4. Position the transmission rear mount and bracket in place.




5. Install the 3 rear transmission mount bracket nuts.

Tighten the nuts to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).




6. Install the 2 remaining transmission rear mount bolts.




7. Position the transmission brace in place and install the transmission rear mount bolt.

Tighten the 3 bolts to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).




8. Install the transmission brace bolt.

Tighten the bolt to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).




9. Tighten the rear transmission mount bracket bolt.

Tighten the bolt to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).




10. Install the steering gear heat shield to the steering gear.
11. Clean any excess power steering fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
12. Install the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear.
13. Install the rack and pinion outer tie rod ends to the steering knuckles.
14. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
15. Adjust the front toe.
