Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

3. Engine Flywheel Removal

Engine Flywheel Removal

Tools Required

J 38122-A Crankshaft Balancer Holder

Important: It may be necessary to remove the chamfer (bevel) from the edge of an 18 mm socket in order to get full socket engagement on the thin headed flywheel bolts.

Do not orientate the flywheel to the crankshaft. It is balanced separately from the engine.

1. Remove the flywheel attaching bolt. Use the J38122-A to prevent crankshaft rotation.

2. Remove the flywheel retainer.
3. Remove the flywheel.
4. Clean the thread adhesive from the flywheel bolt holes. Use a nylon bristle brush to clean the holes in the crankshaft.
