Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair



Catalytic Converter Replacement (2.2L (L61) and 2.4L (LAT))

Removal Procedure

Caution: Ensure that the vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which the components are being removed.

Notice: Excessive flexing of the exhaust pipe may damage the flex coupling. Limit flexing to 12 degrees.




1. Remove the bank 2 heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).

* Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Replacement for the 2.2L engine
* Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Replacement for the 2.4L engine

2. Remove the catalytic converter to muffler assembly nuts and separate the flange from the studs.




3. Remove the catalytic converter to exhaust manifold nuts.




4. Separate the catalytic converter rubber isolator from the hanger.
5. Separate the catalytic converter pipe flange from the exhaust manifold studs, and remove the catalytic converter.
6. Remove and discard the catalytic converter to exhaust manifold gasket.

Installation Procedure




1. Install a NEW catalytic converter to exhaust manifold gasket onto the manifold studs.
2. Install the catalytic converter.
3. Install the catalytic converter rubber isolator to the hanger.





Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice.

4. Install the catalytic converter to exhaust manifold nuts.

Tighten the nuts to 42 N.m (31 lb ft).




5. Install the catalytic converter to the muffler assembly and install the nuts.

Tighten the nuts to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).

6. Install the bank 2 HO2S.
