6. Install the engine support fixture.
7. Tie the radiator, air conditioning condenser, and fan module assembly to the upper radiator support to keep the assembly with the vehicle when the frame is lowered.
8. If equipped with 2.4L (LAT), remove the auxiliary fluid pump.

9. Remove the upper transmission to engine bolts (1, 3, 5, 6) and stud (2).
10. Remove the left transmission mount.
11. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
12. Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies.
13. Remove the splash shield.

14. Remove the bolts (2, 3) from the transmission brace.
15. Remove the transmission brace (1).
16. Remove the starter.
17. Mark the relationship of the flywheel to the torque converter for reassembly.
18. Use the J 43653 to prevent the crankshaft from rotating.

19. Remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts.
20. Remove the nut holding the transmission cooler line retainer to the transmission.
21. Disconnect the transmission cooler lines from the transmission.

22. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) wiring harness from the sensor.
23. Remove the steering gear intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
24. Disconnect the tie rods from the steering knuckle.
25. Disconnect the stabilizer shaft links from the stabilizer shaft.
26. Disconnect the ball joints from the steering knuckles.
27. Remove the frame.
28. Disconnect the wheel drive shafts from the transaxle.
29. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.

30. Remove the lower transmission to engine bolts (5, 6, 7, 8).
31. Separate the engine and the transaxle.
32. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
33. Flush the transmission cooler and the lines with J 35944-A.

34. Remove the following only if replacing the transmission.
* Remove the shift cable bracket bolt (3), nut (1), and bracket (2).
* Remove the park/neutral position (PNP) switch.
* Remove the transmission mounts.

Installation Procedure

1. Install the following if previously removed.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice.

* Install the shift cable bracket (2), bolt (3), and nut (1).

Tighten the bolt (3) and nut (1) to 22 N.m (16 lb ft).

* Install the PNP switch.
* Install the transmission mounts.

2. Position the transaxle in the vehicle.

3. Install the lower transmission to engine bolts (5, 6, 7, 8).

Tighten the bolts to 75 N.m (55 lb ft).

4. Install the wheel drive shafts to the transaxle.
5. Lubricate the transaxle cooler pipes before inserting into seals.
6. Connect the transaxle cooler pipes to the transaxle.
7. Install the transaxle cooler pipes retainer nut.

Tighten the nut to 7 N.m (62 lb in).

8. Use the J 43653 to prevent the crankshaft from rotating.

9. Install the torque converter to flywheel bolts.

Tighten the torque converter bolts to 60 N.m (44 lb ft).

10. Install the starter.
11. Install the frame.
12. Install the steering gear intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
13. Connect the ball joints to the steering knuckles.
14. Connect the stabilizer shaft links to the stabilizer shaft.
15. Connect the tie rods to the steering knuckle.

16. Connect the wiring harness to the VSS.

17. Install the transmission brace (1).
18. Install the transmission brace bolts (2, 3).

Tighten the bolts to 53 N.m (39 lb ft).

19. Install the front splash shields.
20. Install the front wheel and tire assemblies.
21. Lower the vehicle.
22. Install the left transmission mount.

23. Install the upper transmission to engine bolts (1, 3, 5, 6) and stud (2).

Tighten all of the bolts (1, 3, 5, 6) and stud (2) to 75 N.m (55 lb ft).

24. Untie the radiator, air conditioning condenser, and fan module assembly.
25. If equipped with 2.4L (LAT), install the auxiliary fluid pump.
26. Remove the engine support fixture.
27. Connect the transaxle wiring harness to the main transaxle electrical connector, and the PNP switch.

28. Install the shift control cable to the shift control cable bracket (1). Ensure the cable retaining clip (2) is fully seated.
29. Connect the shift control cable (3) to the range select lever (4).
30. Connect the air duct hose to the intake plenum.
31. Install the battery tray.
32. Inspect the transmission fluid level.

Notice: Transmission Auxiliary Pump Priming must be performed after any service procedure is performed on the transmission that involves the draining of and refill of transmission fluid. Failure to perform the Transmission Auxiliary Pump Priming will result in damage to the auxiliary pump and possible damage to the transmission.

33. Using a scan tool, prime the transmission auxiliary pump.

Important: It is recommended that transmission adaptive pressure (TAP) information be reset.

Resetting the TAP values using a scan tool will erase all learned values in all cells. As a result, the engine control module (ECM), powertrain control module (PCM) or transmission control module (TCM) will need to relearn TAP values. Transmission performance may be affected as new TAP values are learned.

34. Reset the TAP values. Refer to Transmission Adaptive Functions.
