Transmission Replacement
Removal Procedure
1. Remove the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement (2.4L LAT-2.4L) () .
2. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement (Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement) .
3. Disconnect the transmission electrical wiring harness from the backup lamp switch and vehicle speed sensor.
4. Remove the wiring harness from the retainers on the transmission.
5. Position the harness out of the way.
6. Disconnect the transmission shift cable terminals (1) from the transmission manual shift lever pins.
7. Release the shift cable retainers (2) from the cable bracket.
8. Position the shift cables out of the way.
Notice: Refer to Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Notice (Vehicle Damage Warnings) .
9. Place a shop towel under the clutch slave cylinder hydraulic hose connection in order to catch any fluid loss.
10. Remove the clutch hydraulic hose retaining clip.
11. Disconnect clutch hydraulic hose from the transaxle.
12. Drain the clutch fluid into a suitable container.
13. Cap the hydraulic hose and clutch slave cylinder in order to prevent fluid loss and contamination.
14. Position the hydraulic hose out of the way.
15. Remove the shop towel and discard into a suitable container.
16. Remove the upper transmission to engine bolts (1).
17. Remove the vehicle frame. Refer to Frame Replacement (4T45-E Transmission) (Frame Replacement (4T45-E Transmission))Frame Replacement (6T70 Transmission) (Frame Replacement (6T70 Transmission))Frame Replacement (Getrag 5 Speed Transmission) (Frame Replacement (Getrag 5 Speed Transmission)) .
18. lower the vehicle.
19. Remove the left transmission mount. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side (Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side) .
20. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair) .
21. Disconnect the wheel drive shafts from the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement (Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement) .
22. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.
23. Remove the lower transmission to engine bolts (1).
24. Separate the engine from the transmission.
25. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. Position the transmission to the engine.
2. Install the lower transmission to engine bolts (1).
Tighten the bolts to 75 N.m (55 lb ft).
3. Install the wheel drive shafts to the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement (Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement) .
4. lower the vehicle.
5. Install the left transmission mount. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side (Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side) .
6. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair) .
7. Install the frame. Refer to Frame Replacement (4T45-E Transmission) (Frame Replacement (4T45-E Transmission))Frame Replacement (6T70 Transmission) (Frame Replacement (6T70 Transmission))Frame Replacement (Getrag 5 Speed Transmission) (Frame Replacement (Getrag 5 Speed Transmission)) .
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Install the upper transmission to engine bolts (1).
Tighten the bolts to 75 N.m (55 lb ft).
10. Uncap the hydraulic hose and clutch slave cylinder.
11. Install the clutch hydraulic hose retaining clip.
12. Connect clutch hydraulic hose to the transaxle.
13. Install the shift cable retainers (2) to the cable bracket.
14. Connect the transmission shift cable terminals (1) to the transmission manual shift lever pins.
15. Connect the transmission electrical wiring harness to the backup lamp switch and vehicle speed sensor.
16. Install the wiring harness to the retainers on the transmission.
17. Install the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement (Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement) .
18. Install the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement (2.4L LAT-2.4L) () .
19. Add transmission fluid as necessary to obtain the proper fluid level in the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Check (Transmission Fluid Check) .
20. Bleed the clutch hydraulic system. Refer to Hydraulic Clutch Bleeding (Service and Repair) .
21. Road test the vehicle.
