Steering Shaft: Service and Repair

Steering Shaft Coupling Replacement

Removal Procedure

Caution: With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:

* The steering column
* The intermediate shaft(s)
* The steering gear

After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil's centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.

1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight forward position and lock the steering column.
2. Remove the left front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
3. Use paint in order to place match marks on the steering shaft coupling and on the steering gear pinion shaft.

Note: The connection shown is for an electronic power steering system. The connection at the steering gear for the hydraulic power steering system and for the two mode hybrid steering system is serviced the same way.

4. Remove the steering shaft coupling bolt (1) at the steering gear.
Discard the bolt.
5. Disconnect the steering shaft coupling from the steering gear.
6. Disengage the steering shaft coupling seal from the body pass-through.
7. Use paint in order to place match marks on the steering shaft coupling and on the steering column shaft.

Note: The connection shown is for an electronic power steering system. The connection at the steering column for the hydraulic power steering system and for the two mode hybrid power steering system is serviced the same way.

8. Remove the steering shaft coupling bolt (1) at the steering column.
Discard the bolt.
9. Disconnect the steering shaft coupling from the steering column.
10. Remove the steering shaft coupling from inside the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

Note: If you are replacing the steering shaft coupling, failure to copy the match marks may result in an off-center steering wheel.

1. If you are replacing the steering shaft coupling, copy the match marks from the old steering shaft coupling to the new steering shaft coupling.
2. Position the steering shaft coupling under the steering column.
3. Align the match marks and connect the steering shaft coupling to the steering column.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

Note: The connection shown is for an electronic power steering system. The connection at the steering column for the hydraulic power steering system and for the two mode hybrid power steering system is serviced the same way.

4. For vehicles with the non-hybrid electronic power steering system, install the NEW steering shaft coupling bolt (1) at the steering column and tighten to 34 Nm (25 lb ft).
For vehicles with the hydraulic power steering system, install the NEW steering shaft coupling bolt at the steering column and tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
For vehicle with the two mode hybrid steering system, install the NEW steering shaft coupling bolt at the steering column and tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
5. Seat the steering shaft coupling seal into the body pass-through.
6. Align the match marks and connect the steering shaft coupling to the steering gear.

Note: The connection shown is for an electronic power steering system. The connection at the steering gear for the hydraulic power steering system and for the two mode hybrid steering system is serviced the same way.

7. For vehicles with the non-hybrid electronic power steering system, install the NEW steering shaft coupling bolt (1) at the steering gear and tighten to 34 Nm (25 lb ft).
For vehicles with the hydraulic power steering system, install the NEW steering shaft coupling bolt at the steering gear and tighten to 33 Nm (24 lb ft).
For vehicle with the two mode hybrid steering system, install the NEW steering shaft coupling bolt at the steering gear and tighten to 33 Nm (24 lb ft).
8. Install the left front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
