Applicability

Introduction

Some 2008-2009 model year Scion xB vehicles may exhibit an intermittent condition where multiple Malfunction Indicator Lights (MIL) remain illuminated after start up and the power steering system will enter the fail safe mode. The vehicle may return to normal after cycling the key.

The following DTCs will be stored in the EPS ECU:

^ U0100 - Lost Communication with ECM/PCM "A"

^ U0129 - Lost Communication with Brake System Control Module

The following DTCs may be stored in the VSC (ABS) system:

^ U0073 - Control Module Communication Bus OFF

^ U0123 - Lost Communication with Yaw Rate Sensor Module

^ U0124 - Lost Communication with Lateral Acceleration Sensor Module

^ U0126 - Lost Communication with Steering Angle Sensor Module

The EPS ECU software has been updated to prevent this condition. Replace the EPS ECU if DTCs U0100 and U0129 are stored in the EPS ECU.

APPLICABLE WARRANTY

^ This repair is Covered under the Toyota Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

^ Warranty application is limited to occurrence of the specified condition described in this bulletin.





Required Tools & Equipment

Repair Procedure

1. Connect TIS Techsteam to vehicle and check for DTCs.

2. If DTCs UO1OO and U0126 are stored in the EPS ECU replace the EPS ECU.

NOTE

DTCs U0078, U0123, U0124 and U0126 may be stored in the VSC (ABS) system.





Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS) applicable model year Scion xB Repair Manual:

3. Check and clear all codes.

4. Initialize rotation angle sensor and calibrate torque sensor zero point.
