THEFT DETERRENT / KEYLESS ENTRY: SMART KEY SYSTEM (for Entry Function): SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

1. VEHICLE BATTERY SAVING FUNCTION

(a) When the smart key system (for Entry Function) is operating, the vehicle performs key detection operations every 0.25 seconds. Therefore, if the vehicle is left as is for a long period of time, the battery may become fully depleted. The following functions help reduce the rate at which the battery is depleted.

(1) If the engine is not started for 6 days or more, periodic signal transmission from the electrical key antennas stops. However, the doors can still be unlocked by touching the unlock sensor of a front door outside handle assembly.

(2) If the engine is not started for 15 days or more, the lock and unlock sensors of the front door outside handle assembly RH are disabled. Therefore, only the unlock sensor of the front door outside handle assembly LH can be used to unlock the doors.

(3) If 10 minutes or more elapse while the electrical key transmitter is in the detection area (including the vehicle interior), smart key system (for Entry Function) control stops operating.

(b) To restore operation of the smart key system (for Entry Function), perform any of the following operations.

(1) While carrying the electrical key transmitter, touch the lock and unlock sensor of the front door outside handle assembly LH and perform a door lock or unlock operation.

(2) Lock or unlock the doors with the wireless operation.

(3) Insert the mechanical key into the door key cylinder of the driver side door and lock or unlock the doors.

2. WARNING FUNCTION

(a) Shift lever not in P (power source cut reminder) vehicle exit warning (for Automatic Transaxle)

(1) Situation A: The driver side door is opened and a vehicle exit is attempted while the shift lever is not in P.

(2) Situation B: Under the conditions specified in situation A, the electrical key transmitter is brought out of the vehicle, the driver side door is closed and movement away from the vehicle is attempted.

(b) Key reminder warning

(1) The driver side door is opened and a vehicle exit is attempted while the steering lock is unlocked.

* *: For vehicles with last mode.

(c) Shift lever in P (power source cut reminder) vehicle exit warning (for Automatic Transaxle)

(1) Situation A: The driver side door is opened and a vehicle exit is attempted while the shift lever is in P and the engine switch is not turned off.

(2) Situation B: Under the conditions specified in situation A, the doors are closed and an entry lock operation is attempted.

(d) Passenger has brought key out of vehicle warning

(1) Any door other than the driver side door is opened and a vehicle exit is attempted while carrying the key.

(e) Starting to drive without key warning

(1) The driver starts driving while the electrical key transmitter is not in the vehicle.

(f) Key is not within detection area warning

(1) An attempt is made to turn the engine switch on (ACC) or on (IG) or to start the engine while the electrical key transmitter cannot be detected inside the vehicle or while the electrical key transmitter is not operating properly.

(g) Key left inside vehicle warning

(1) An entry lock operation is attempted while the key is inside the vehicle.

(h) Key lock-in prevention function

(1) The key is locked in the vehicle.

* *: A keyless lock operation is when a door is locked by operating the door lock knob of an open door, and then closing the door while pulling the front door outside handle assembly.

(i) Key battery low warning

(1) The vehicle is driven while the transmitter battery is almost depleted.

(j) Engine starting support

(1) An attempt is made to start the engine by holding the electrical key transmitter against the engine switch while the transmitter battery is fully depleted.

(2) The system judges that the driver does not understand how to start the engine.

* *1: for Automatic Transaxle

* *2: for Manual Transaxle

(3) An attempt is made to start the engine while the shift lever is in a position that does not permit the engine to be started.

* *: for Automatic Transaxle

(k) Power source off operation advice

(1) An attempt is made to turn the engine switch off while the shift lever is not in P or N.

* *: for Automatic Transaxle

3. SEQUENCE OF ACTIONS FOR SMART KEY SYSTEM

* This lists a sequence of actions pertaining to the smart key system (unlocking the doors, turning the power source mode to on (ACC) and on (IG), starting and stopping the engine, and locking the doors). The system can be inspected easily by confirming that the operations listed for each step occur.

* The following example shows how the information in this section is organized. The "Action" item indicates actions the user performs related to the smart key system, and the "Expected Vehicle Response" item indicates the normal vehicle behavior in response to those actions. The suspected problem areas when the vehicle does not behave as expected and troubleshooting hints for each area are listed under "Suspected Area when Expected Vehicle Response Fails and Troubleshooting Information".

HINT
* Smart key system DTCs and Data List information can be confirmed with the Techstream.
* Check for DTCs using the following method. If any DTCs are output, perform troubleshooting for those DTCs first.
(1) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(2) Turn the engine switch on (IG).
(3) Turn the Techstream on.
(4) Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Smart Key, Starting Control, Power Source Control and Main Body / Trouble Codes.
(5) Check for DTCs.

NOTICE:
* When the engine switch cannot be turned on (IG), try to establish communication between the vehicle and the Techstream by using either of the following methods: 1) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3 and turn a courtesy light switch on and off at intervals of 1.5 seconds or less until communication between the Techstream and vehicle begins (the Techstream screen changes when communication begins), or 2) connect the Techstream to the vehicle and select "Manual" from the initial screen on the Techstream, and then select "Key Code Registration" under model code.
* If the smart key system functions have been canceled through the customize function due to a customer request, "Auto Entry Cancel SW" in the Data List displays "ON".
