Removal and Installation

1. Remove spare tire and disconnect battery ground cables. On fuel injected models, relieve fuel system pressure before disconnecting ground cables as follows:
a. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect fuel pump electrical connector.
b. Lower vehicle and start engine.
c. After engine stops, crank engine for approximately five seconds, then turn ignition switch to the OFF position.
d. Raise and support vehicle, then connect fuel pump electrical connector.
e. Lower vehicle.
2. Disconnect necessary vacuum hoses and ducts noting installation position, then remove air cleaner and air flow sensor assemblies, as equipped.
3. Remove spare tire bracket, then disconnect and plug fuel lines to engine.
4. On automatic transmission models, disconnect diaphragm vacuum hose from intake manifold.
5. On all models, disconnect two multiple wire connectors, then the distributor high tension cable, alternator electrical connectors, vacuum switch hose and starter electrical connectors.
6. Remove accelerator cable adjusting nut and disconnect cable.
7. On manual transmission models, remove clutch return spring.
8. On models equipped with hill-holder, disconnect the pressure hold valve at bracket.

Fig. 4 Engine Pitching Stopper Removal:

9. On all models, remove the pitching stopper, Fig. 1.
10. On automatic transmission models, remove four torque converter to drive plate retaining bolts through the timing hole. Use caution to avoid dropping bolts into housing during removal.
11. On all models, loosen two upper bolts and two lower nuts retaining engine to transmission. Do not remove starter from housing.
12. Remove two upper engine to transmission retaining bolts.
13. Remove splash shield located below radiator fan.
14. Drain coolant and disconnect both inlet and outlet radiator hoses.
15. Disconnect thermoswitch and fan motor electrical connections.
16. Disconnect and plug transmission cooling lines, if equipped, then remove radiator mounting bolts and the radiator.
17. On models equipped with A/C, remove compressor as follows:
a. Discharge A/C system, disconnect refrigerant lines from compressor, then plug open lines and fittings.
b. Disconnect electrical connector from compressor clutch and remove pulser.
c. Remove alternator, front drive belt and the upper compressor bracket.
d. Remove cooling fan and clutch assembly, rear drive belt and the idler pulley assembly.
e. Remove compressor and lower bracket as an assembly.
18. On vehicles equipped with power steering, remove oil pump assembly and bracket as follows:
a. Remove idler pulley cap. Cover the idler cap with a soft cloth to prevent damage.
b. Loosen pulley lock bolt.
c. Loosen adjustment bolt and remove oil pump belt.
d. Remove oil pump retaining bolts and position pump aside. Position pump carefully to avoid damage to hoses or loss of oil.
e. Remove pump bracket.
19. On all models, disconnect heater inlet and outlet hose.
20. Raise and support front of vehicle.
21. Remove hot air intake hose and stove from exhaust pipe.
22. If equipped, remove oxygen sensor electrical connector.
23. Remove exhaust manifold assembly retaining bolts and manifold assembly.
24. On automatic transmission models, loosen the IEM bracket retaining bolts approximately .4 inches.
25. On manual transmission models, remove the IEM bracket retaining bolt securing the bracket to the exhaust assembly. Secure the exhaust manifold assembly to a crossmember with wire.
26. On all models, remove front engine mount nuts.
27. Remove the two lower engine to transmission retaining nuts.
28. Support transmission with suitable jack, then lower vehicle and remove engine using suitable lifting device.
29. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. When installing the pitching stopper, tighten nut securely at vehicle body side, then tighten the rear nut on the engine side so there is a clearance of .03-.05 inch on manual transmission models or .07-.09 inch on automatic transmission models between the rubber cushion and the washer. Torque the front nut to 10 ft.lbs. while restraining the rear nut from turning.
b. Torque the following fasteners: engine mount nuts to 14-25 ft.lbs. (2-3.4 kg-m), front exhaust pipe to engine bolts to 19-22 ft.lbs. (2.6-3 kg-m), front exhaust pipe to rear exhaust pipe to 31-38 ft.lbs. (4.3-5.3 kg-m), front exhaust pipe to bracket bolt to 6.5-9.4 ft.lbs. (.9-1.3 kg-m), pitching stopper nut to 2.2-6.5 ft.lbs. (.3-.9 kg-m), radiator mounting bolts to 7-13 ft.lbs. (1-1.8 kg-m), and if equipped, torque converter to drive-plate bolts to 17-20 ft.lbs. (2.3-2.7 kg-m).
