Front Cross-Member: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove spare tire and raise and support front of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
3. Remove air cleaner assembly and pitching stopper rod. Install a dust cover over carburetor to prevent entry of foreign material.
4. Remove parking brake cable bracket from transverse link.
5. Remove ball stud cotter pin and castle nut and disconnect tie rod from housing knuckle arm.
6. Remove front exhaust pipe.
7. Remove nut from transverse link bushing and disconnect link from crossmember.
8. Remove engine mount to crossmember retaining link.
9. Remove torque rod to pinion shaft retaining bolts.
10. Raise engine .39 inches (10 mm) using a suitable chain hoist or jack.
11. Position a suitable jack under the crossmember.
12. Remove crossmember to body retaining nuts and carefully lower crossmember from vehicle.
13. Reverse procedure to install. Torque transverse link bushing to crossmember retaining bolts to 40-47 ft.lbs. Torque tie rod end to housing to 18-22 ft.lbs. Torque engine mount to crossmember 14-24 ft.lbs., steering pinion shaft to steering torque rod 10-14 ft.lbs., and crossmember to body to 40-47 ft.lbs.
