Drain and Refill

CHECKING FLUID LEVEL

Transmission

1. With transmission fluid at operating temperature (140 to 176°F), park vehicle on a level surface.
2. With engine idling and brakes applied, move selector lever through all ranges and return to Park.
3. With engine idling, remove dipstick and check fluid level. Fluid level should be between the add and full marks.
4. Add Dexron type automatic transmission fluid as necessary to bring level within limits.

Differential

On early models, remove differential filler plug and check to ensure that gear oil level is at bottom of filler plug hole. On late models, remove dipstick and check to ensure that gear oil level is between the add and full marks. Add SAE 80W, 85W or 90 gear oil as necessary to bring fluid level within limits.

DRAIN & REFILL

Transmission

On 1984 models and 1985-88 4 wheel drive models, transmission fluid should be changed at 30 month or 30,000 mile intervals.
1. Remove transmission oil pan drain plug and allow transmission to drain, Figs. 1 and 2.
2. Install transmission oil pan drain plug and gasket and torque to 33 ft.lbs.
3. Add approximately 2.6 to 3.2 quarts of Dexron type automatic transmission fluid to transmission through dipstick filler tube.
4. Check transmission fluid level as described under ``Checking Fluid Level.''

Differential

The differential gear oil should be changed after the first 1,000 miles of operation, then at intervals of 30 months or 30,000 miles.
1. Remove differential drain plug and allow gear oil to drain.
2. Install differential drain plug and gasket and torque to 18 ft.lbs.
3. On early models, remove differential filler plug and add approximately 1.7 to 2.5 pts. of SAE 80W, 85W or 90 gear oil to differential. Fill differential until gear oil level is at bottom of differential filler plug hole, then install filler plug.
4. On late models, remove differential dipstick and add SAE 80W, 85W or 90 gear oil to differential through dipstick tube until gear oil level is between the add and full marks on the dipstick. This will require approximately 1.3 qts. exc. on 4 wheel drive models, .8 qts. on 4 wheel drive models.
