TRANSAXLE REMOVAL

1. Open hood, then remove spare tire and support.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Disconnect vacuum diaphragm hose.
4. Disconnect speedometer from transmission.
5. Disconnect wiring from back-up lamp switch, vehicle body ground cable and starter motor harness.
6. Remove four bolts attaching torque converter to drive plate through timing hole, then disconnect oil cooler lines at transmission. Cap end of cooler lines to prevent fluid leakage.
7. Remove starter motor and battery cable and position on bulkhead.
8. Remove upper bolts attaching transmission to engine, then loosen lower transmission to engine attaching nuts.
9. Loosen nut which retains pitching stopper to transmission side approximately 10 mm and tighten nut on engine side by an equal amount. Slightly tilt engine rearward to facilitate transmission removal. Do not tighten the nut more than 10 mm.
10. Raise front of vehicle and position safety stands at jack pads located in front of side sills.
11. Remove oxygen sensor and front exhaust pipe from vehicle.
12. Drain transmission fluid, then disconnect fluid supply pipe using care not to damage O-ring. When removing propeller shaft, use care not to damage oil seal. Also cap open end of driveshaft to prevent oil spillage.
13. Place selector lever in Park position, then mark location of connector nut and separate manual lever from linkage rod.
14. Remove stabilizer bar, then remove bolts that attach left and right transverse links to front crossmember and lower transverse links.
15. Drive left and right spring pins from axle shaft. Spring pins should be discarded and new spring pins installed during assembly.

16. Push wheels outward to separate axle shaft from driveshaft, Fig. 4.
17. Remove right parking brake cover to facilitate removal of rear crossmember.
18. Remove mount retaining nuts from rear crossmember.
19. Support transmission using a suitable jack, then remove crossmember.
20. Remove two bolts attaching transmission to engine and move transmission away from engine just enough for mainshaft to clear engine, then carefully lower transmission from vehicle.
21. Reverse procedure to install.
